ever since i was a kid my mind has wanted to invent things

i had a little kids electric toothbrush back in the day.

it was a Fat Albert electric toothbrush where there was fat albert being fat and he had a tooth brush sticking out of his head.

but my favorite show was Happy Days, and of course Fonzie was the best.

so i, in my mind, invented a Fonzie electric tooth brush.

instead of the brush jutting out of his head, i wanted it to come out of his thumb.

and i wanted him to say his famous “hey” when you flicked on the tooth brush

but because it was an electric tooth brush it would say

“heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.”

on the left is mr mark milian

today is his last day. hes moving to cnn

i have written about mark before. he came to us a few summers ago as a college intern and was so great we kept him around. i got blasted with him on monday as a farewell.

on the right is mr johannes from germany. he was here for a few months in an exchange program of sorts. this is what he wrote to the staff today in his farewell email. although it’s not typical inverted pyramid style, the best part of his note is as the end.

Hey everybody,

today is my last day at the Times.

The two months at the Times have been great. It was an honor and also a lot of fun to work at your outstanding newspaper. I want to thank every one of you for helping me and making this experience so great. I learned a lot and wrote a lot of stories for my newspaper in Munich. I would love to stay here for a longer time, but unfortunately time flew and I have to go back to Germany. My boss wants me to work on Monday.

I’ll definitely miss The Times and also the way you work. There is a far more investigative approach in every story you write than in an average German newspaper. In my first day I saw Angela Spaccia in Maywood’s City Hall. In my last week here I’ve seen her on TV as a defendant.

So, thanks again, I would love to hear from you.

Stay in touch.
Best,
Johannes

For as large of a paper as we are we have very few critics. one reason might be because of what our german friend alluded to: people who have actually worked here this century know that the high level of journalism that made the paper what it is is still very much alive and well here and being practiced every day.

which may be one reason our people keep being poached by those who want what we’ve got.

ask me anything

Q. Do you really still play video games?

A. ive been around forever. i have had almost every major video game system including the Philips CD-i. i love playing games, but i have to admit that because of my advanced age some of the newfangled dealies make me nauseous.

with that said the two games ive been playing a lot lately are Madden Football 2010 and this weird iphone app called Bookworm.

the truest showed me Bookworm on our flight back from Chicago and i’ve been addicted ever since. its a simple game, a lot like word search with a lil twist.

as someone who loves words, i embraced it immediately and seriously i wake up early to play it and go to sleep late spelling words. the score on the right is something i was able to accomplish after playing for nearly two days straight without dying.

i even played it drunk last night walking home from the subway.

im not sure i have another two days in me spelling those words but id really like to break three million to feel like i got my $2.99 worth.

took the truest to the hollywood bowl on saturday

for the sound of music singalong

we had pretty great seats. close enough to almost reach out and touch the costumed attendees

this little girl was dressing up to be the frog in Julie Andrews’ pocket

the MC lady was really funny. the kids would go on stage, she’d coo and turn em around

there were lots of nuns

this little girl was “wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings” (from my favorite things)

and this one was “brown paper packages tied up with string”

the winner was this little girl who was a gold drop of something. who knows, i was drunk.

good night. good nite. gooooooood niiiiiiiiite!

made it back home alive

after a very nice flight on jetblue.

to save some money we routed our flight through long beach instead of LAX.

i think the difference in price was $80 from chicago to the lbc instead of through LAX, but then we realized we had no ride from the airport.

we were thinking about a super shuttle type van but we were so tired. the difference in price was $60 for a shuttle or $75 for a cab so we took the cab. turned out the meter was almost exactly exact from the airport to the truest’s house.

near her crib we decided that i wanted to crash at my house and she wanted to soak in her tub at her place. so i told the dude to keep the meter running as she climbed the stairs of her bachelorette pad.

but my cabbie didnt seem to know what i was talking about and turned off the meter.

he said he couldnt pick up any fares in LA so he didnt mind driving me to my place on the other side of hollywood (a $25 cab ride, typically) and he said he’d do it for free.

without her in the car i started talking to him. turned out he was from Cambodia and moved here 30 years ago after his family was slaughtered after it was discovered that his father was in the army. because he was a teen at the time he was in the jungle working so as they killed his mom and brothers and sisters he was saved.

he now drives a cab seven days a week in long beach supporting his family of five. he has four children, two are in the us army, the other two are in college.

his oldest has served two tours of iraq with the marines and soon may be deployed to iraq. he has your fathers warrior spirit i said. he shrugged.

we talked a little about religion. he said that cambodia and thailand share a border and many types of food and buddhism. he said he doesnt have much time to go to the temple to pray.

i gave him the extra $25 when we got to my place. why not.
