There was a time when @LAist quadrupled the @LATimes' #1 blog because it figured out to fill in the gaps the Times felt too important to cover.
It would have either retweeted the news from today or blogged something up about it… even on a weekend.

When both the media and the police agree that this isn't news.
But .2 inches of rain calls for Team Fucking Coverage
Then nobody actually wins.
There is no victory when the paper is more concerned w/what's planned on the Google calendar than what's happening on the streets pic.twitter.com/9whTLYIPIg

Why is the paper so important? Bc @KTLA @NBCLA @ABC7 @FOXLA @CBSLA mimic everything hyperlocal the @LATimes does that can be easily slapped on TV.
And often @KNX1070 @KFIAM640 even @KPCC will follow suit via the rip-n-read.
But it has to start at the Times.
So, congrats LAPD.

Congrats on getting the headline of your dreams
– with no video of anything in the story
– with no accounts from the victims of the police beatings
– with no accounts from those who saw it go down
– and with plenty of quotes from… the LAPD pic.twitter.com/pVnmq0PuDK— tony pierce (@busblog) July 18, 2021
