california love

i couldnt be more happy with the podcast

and blog post for todays episide of Hear in LA

it’s with a guy i used to work with at E! 20 years ago who is a photographer and curator who helps shine a light on other photographers

it’s crazy to think i would not have ever seen any of these pictures if it hadn’t been for Michael, and yet here they are and they’re beautiful and im so happy to help him help others

michael also happened to tell me about his neighbor who is a character and you will be hearing about him very shortly too

if i had my way

id release 5 episodes of hear in LA next week

we have more than that many in the can and i just listened to one of them today

and it is soooooooo goooood

is this why i dont have children?

i would have just loved the newest one and forgotten about the rest?

the one coming out today is with alex dionne who i went to ucsb with

who is a real estate person now in a very fancy part of LA

so she has sold a house that cost over $5 million.

you get $100k commission for that

her answers were so good but because im an idiot i didnt know how to mic the convo

therefore theres echos every where in the thing

like so much it sounds like we are in a church inside a cave inside my skull

i wonder if people will ignore it

im such a weirdo about sound quality now

im terrified people will stop listening due to technical issues

anyways shes great and, heres the people off the top of my head coming up next

sass, a dude who the cops targeted, a woman who used to work for shonda, a dude who the sheriff of LA hates the most, a great photographer, a woman who knows everything about transportation, and a guy who played bass in bob dylans band

i want them all out right now

the world needs to hear all of this it’s so good – but i only do 2 a week

that means half of that you wont hear until next month

i may have to convince jordan that we need to do a menage a trois weekend and bust with three on the same week… or even three in the same day omg omg

i like secret weapons

money mark and mario c were the secret weapons of the Beastie Boys post Pauls Boutique

the boys (and their lawyers) didnt want to pay out the exorbitant fees required when using samples

so they had to pick up their own instruments and play.

the boys were good, but could use help

mario c was a great producer and percussionist and he knew money mark who played keyboards

the other day i interviewed Mark and he was so cool, so chill, so open to talking about anything

it was a delight

then i had him sign one of my Beastie Boys posters and he was gracious about that too.

i wish i could tell you how happy i am

we are so ahead of schedule on hear in LA

it is the perfect time to update the website.

and

the interviews ive done that are in the can

the ones ive done that havent been edited yet

and the ones ive got lined up

are sooooooooo goooooooood

today and yesterday i did two hour interviews

i told jordan, just turn them into MP3s and i’ll time code the easy cuts out of there

but theres 90 minutes each of quality content so the rest will be hard

solid people. all of them. LA is the best.

which is to say, it’s as good as your favorite place.

super full day

the day started when i uploaded the newest episode of Hear in LA

today is Season 5: Atwater Village

Sabrina See was so funny, so real, can’t wait to do the webpage this weekend

then I got interviewed on a podcast about race, hosted by a half vietnamese dude

it was on Zoom which i dont like but i liked the topic

fun

then i sped to Larchmont Village to interview a real estate agent who i went to college with

she brought sandwiches i brought water we podcasted in her offices training room

it was 100x better than i expected hopefully that will come out in a month

there was this weed thing i was invited to. i wasnt sure if i wanted to go

but i was pumped from the two interviews and i had a mini baguette of a sandwich i hadnt eaten yet

i was relatively close to the grove so i said lets see what movie is there to kill 2 hours

because the weed thing was in santa monica and didnt start for 2 hours

turned out the apple store moved to a place with higher ceilings

because why?

saw the new sandra bullock rom com

it was cringe in parts and a little cheesy

but also a little good.

shes amazing

then said fuckit and went to the weed thing

ran into adam from the LA Times who we *just* were on twitter trying to arrange a time

he could be on the podcast and there he was

with his boss

and the weed company is actually a vape company

so they gave us a vape

and six boxes of weed things you put on the vape

interesting finger foods

free drinks

and free valet.

drove adam home

got home and tried the vape and we’ll see if i cough in the morning

because each puff made me cough

but i gotta say, the stuff works

and hasn’t kept me from being productive.

speaking of heres what ive got tomorrow

chinatown interview / doctors appt / phone interview / atwater village interview

then i have a lunch on saturday

for the record i do not really like to be doing This Much over three days

but if this vape works, it may be tolerable

have i told you theres a war going on?

i dont know how they’re doing it but the ukrainans are putting up a super good fight

and the best things that have happened is any time they capture a russian tank shoot down a tank

some dude in a John Deere tractor drives the thing to whereever

and everyone takes pictures.

fucking classic.

and if you ask me, great photo op for John Deere.

i had a fantastic conversation with an artist named Dalila

she told me so many things including how her mom and grandma reacted when she Came Out

(not well)

you think youve had some struggles in your life, and you have, but then you hear what other people have gone through

and how the closest people in their lives freaked out over it

and did the opposite of what you thought theyd do

and it makes you be so grateful for your life.

i am grateful for mine

and im especially grateful i get to do what i am doing now

and the ppl in my life support me

and all will be even better very soon.

damn am i happy with how eagle rock is turning out

the first one was joe armstrong, great guy, so smart, so well spoken

and he turned me on to a woman who is a friend of his girlfriend

and she was so great too but different because unlike joe who grew up in IL

rebecca grew up in Eagle Rock and had all these amazing stories about taking the bus east to Pasadena to volunteer at KROQ in the early 1980s

and then at night take the bus west to Hollywood and Santa Monica

TO DANCE AT THE SAME DAMN CLUBS I WAS DANCING IN.

even though im trying not to be as obsessed with the blog posts at hearinLA.com

because theyre slowing my roll, she talked about all these great pics she had

and she sent me like 9-10 that were fine, but nothing popped

today as we were texting i said now or never do you have any more

and she said i have one where im making out with the singer of INXS

i was all michael hutchence? what? prob one of the sexiest singers of that era

who tragically died young

i said, you dont wanna humble brag?

and she said yeah where is it.

she found it and it was the one above which was soooooo goooooood

i was all yes thats it omg omg

i still cant believe how good it was and our convo and how eagle rock is falling in place.

i was on Twitter allllll day and while talking about movies, the last video store left in LA

vidiots, who is moving to eagle rock, liked something i wrote about film preservation

so i DMed them and said PLEASE BE ON HEAR IN LA AS I AM WRAPPING UP EAGLE ROCK

and they said hows about thursday

so yes it sucks that my pay is being delayed because that is whats supposed to keep me afloat as i do this podcast

but thank the stars above for hooking me up with all these great guests

because thats really what matters right now

the money will come

and every month that MF doesn’t pay me i make another $1k or more in late fees and interest

which is more than what id be making if i was Ubering ppl around LA right now once you deduct gas

had an old pal from chicago email me

said, when you’re ready for that fool to pay, get back at me.

the only problem with Hear in LA is me

let’s say in 10 years i finish this thing.

i will overshadow it.

the same way Huell Howser overshadowed his show, and Anthony Bourdain overshadowed his, and Studs Terkel overshadowed Working.

you can’t help it. you think of the host and not the guest.

and worse, some people might not even dive into the thing because of the host.

in no way am i saying that i am powerful enough to go to every neighborhood in LA and the takeaway will be omg tony pierce is cooler than LA… im saying it will be known as a crazy epic thing that tony pierce made

instead of, omg heres all the neighborhoods of LA, thus here is LA, thus wow – lets check out some of these places

AND

how cool were those people.

it seems to me the only way to get those results instead of the one i am afraid of

is to do it with a team. the bigger the better.

today Kevin Merida, the new editor of the LA Times, basically said Hear in LA is the way the LA Times should build trust.  when i agreed, both Angel Jennings (who used to be the only Black reporter on the giant Metro desk – and now she’s on the masthead) and the EIC both liked my reply when I said it was perfect.

not only do i hope they didn’t think i was being sarcastic

but i hope they know that if i am approached to do Hear in LA at the Times I would be more than interested, but i would want it to be a full court press

i would want as many people on the payroll as possible to interview the people in their neighborhood.

because when it’s a full team effort, the story becomes less about the storytellers

and way more about the people who are in those neighborhoods.

when Hear in LA is completed, i want people to remember the people.

is this thing gonna work out?

the first few times i went into the Daily Nexus i was so afraid

also i did not understand the instructions and my first “piece” was thrown directly into the garbage

area

aka the floor.

it wasn’t even good enough for the can.

a few years later i was one vote away from being the boss.

i love every one of these podcasts.

i love todays too.

why it’s not on fire is beyond me.

are people busy?

this is the most interesting challenge i have had in a very long time and maybe because i care so much, it’s like straining when youre on the throne

and you should just let it ease out.

and then go on with life.

but i cannot go on with life.

this is my life.

odd because if i literally do not move on to the next episode

we wont get to it

and it’s due in a few days.

today’s was the 19th or 20th episode.

Jodie Evans

someone got mad about it.

i know im doing something wrong, but i dont care

every time i put out a podcast it flops on my Facebook.

i can’t figure out the algorithm. FB typically doesn’t like links that go outside of its walls, so i make little videos and upload them into FB.

it doesnt seem to like that neither.

maybe my friends are tired of me, of IT of my subjects.

but the subjects dont really tweet it out either.

people dont write me nice emails saying what a good job i did for them.

all of which is weird because

I FRICKIN LOVE EVERY SINGLE PODCAST

i love the blog posts, i love the commercials, i love it allllllllll

i almost want to tweet

“i dont care if you dont listen to this but here it is”

but i do care

the thing is i care slightly less every week because i know people arent going to listen in the numbers i want them to listen.

we’ve done 19 episodes and only one girl is all omg lets make love.

one other has said something like that but shes married so it doesnt count.

the omg lets sex it up ratio needs to improve

but again, i dont care because i know how great these things are.

i know if i get hit by a meteor tomorrow people will say sure the busblog, sure LAist

but have you heard Hear in LA? it’s genius.

so much credit has to go to Jordan and if i die i hope he gets all the credit he deserves because heres the crazy thing that you dont see: when you have a team, a real team, sometimes you need the other guy to slam it home.

i can dribble dribble dribble but when i alley

i need someone to oop.

jordan slams it home every time.

he makes it better, but more importantly he closes the deal.

the other day i was all, ok we need some audio clips from jake’s youtube. i found them, sent them to jordan and because jordan is a pro musician he added some original piano underneath one of the clips to make it sound sad.

it made the whole thing sound perfect.

i cant believe how lucky and happy i am to be doing this.

if i can get even the smallest part time job for a little while i will be able to keep this train rolling

because someone is going to discover this
