i like people who stand for things

people can be against things, that’s fine.

people can try to stop you from your dreams… cool

but those who will, say, starve themselves because their favorite TV show has been pulled off the air? now those are my people.

i had just stood in line at the Popeyes on Hollywood Blvd to get that spicy chicken sandwich. i had nothing else to do so i walked home instead of taking the subway – gotta get those steps.

as i approached Sunset and the Netflix HQ, i saw a woman who i had seen a few times earlier in the week.

she had her sign that said Save The OA

but while i was driving in the past i hadn’t noticed that in small print it said Hunger Strike.

this woman had not eaten in 5 days when i approached her and had the nice little chat in the video.

i love TV. theres three TVs in my 1BR apartment. but would i stop eating if one of them shut down?

no. does that make me a bad person?

and how horrible was i holding a bag of Popeyes chicken talking to a woman who only had drank water for nearly a week? im a monster.

and then i asked her which foods she missed.

that proves im terrible.

so i posted the first minute of this on my Instagram and tagged she and the other young lady who was protesting and it’s already the most popular video of the month on my IG.

i think i will start roaming around talking to more people.

Is beauty enough? Fine directing, gorgeous images. But what if the plot is so thin it doesn’t exist?

This movie reminds me of getting your car cleaned so well that you cant tell if you even have a windshield

but then you realize you’re driving through endless fields of corn.

dear tony, how would you market a microphone?

Hi Tony,

I appreciate your patience with me, but I really think you’d be a great podcaster. You seem to know everyone in LA, and our company would sponsor your show if you mentioned our microphones (which we would provide, gratis).

But since you repeatedly decline, can you help brainstorm with us? We are having difficulty branding our mics – and it’s a very competitive market that we are in.

Regards,

Mike

whaddup, Mike,

podcasting is fine, but i’m not sure it’s for me. when i was at KPCC, i saw how difficult audio editing is, and to, me, great podcasting involves great editing – but it also requires fantastic content. i think you are thinking too inside-the-box by focusing on podcasters. think bigger. think Chappelle.

there are two places where lots of people see people rock the mic: musicians and comedians. bands have all these layers you have to deal with: the label, management, all of their existing sponsors, and who knows what else.

but comedians — there may be an opening there. and for sure there’s no branding between them and their sole tool: the mic.

here’s what i recommend. make a mic with a solid blue line that wraps around the shaft right under the meshy part (sorry I don’t know the terms). make another one with a red line.

send the sketches of the blue mic to Comedy Central and the red one to Netflix. tell them the truth, that when people see a guy like Chappelle on youtube, there’s no way to know if he is doing something from a CC special or a Netflix special unless they’re super fans.

BUT if people start seeing that blue line on a mic after a while they might start connecting the dots that “oh, that means Comedy Central”. likewise the red one would mean Netflix.

then you put out ads that say something like, “there’s a fine line between clever and stupid” under all these pics of comedians holding your blue or red mics (depending on which company understands that you are ALSO helping them brand their network).

yours in rock,

tony

what Netflix should do with Stranger Things

stranger things

i like binging as much as the next guy. i order two pizzas, i fire up the little flat screen with the Ps4 and I turn on the big flat screen with the Netflix.

then i eat, play video games, and watch an entire 8-episode season, as it was intended.

stranger things posterbut now that Netflix has a hit on its hands with Stranger Things, I wish they would do something that goes against their very nature:

i wish they would show next season’s episodes one week at a time.

you know, like regular TV shows do.

they should do it for several reasons starting with spoilers.

imagine what would have happened with Game of Thrones if they dumped entire seasons out there all at once.

the spoilers would spread on day one and no one would be universally shocked when their favorite character meets their doom —

or is resurrected.

with this plan, every week will be appointment television for those who know they want to Netflix and chill,

so why not feed on that?

why not give them what they want every week for certain shows like OITNB, Love, and Stranger Things, and let them dump entire seasons out there for the unproven series

far be it from me to tell the wildly successful Netflix how to do their thing, but i didnt want Stranger Things to be over so quickly,

but i also didn’t want some jackhole giving away how the season ended, so i watched it faster than i wanted to.

first world problems aside, one reason im not a fan of Sugarfish is because, like binging tv series, some of us prefer to savor the beauty.

i fully understand that one reason netflix and other outlets put out all of the shows at once is to create a big splash, but congratulations, you have a big splash, Stranger Things is a hit. now move on to phase two of your plan: weekly domination.

bonus: since the show is a huge wet kiss to 70s/80s nostalgia i would play retro commercials before and after each episode,

some of which are actually real.
