i may not be a huge success but im not a fucking sellout asshole liar

head of the DEA

this is Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg.

just look at him.

his whole life he has seen people smoke weed.

he knows people who have smoked weed.

but one thing we know for sure: he has never ever ever seen someone smoke weed and die.

he hasn’t even read about it.

but yesterday he got on the mic and said that, indeed, marijuana should be considered just as dangerous as LSD and heroin.

heroin, of course, is a drug where if someone takes too much of it they will die.

but Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg doesn’t want to do the right thing today.

he doesn’t want to say, weed has never killed anyone. it’s easy to stop doing. and it’s easy to regulate.

it’s as easy to deal with as booze or cigarettes, and in fact we could make a ton of money off sales tax and other sorts of taxes if we wanted.

but instead of that we want to lock people in jails, and take their shit, and take their money and ruin their lives.

Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg basically said yesterday that the laws surrounding marijuana are more dangerous than the plant itself

and thats ok with him

because he’s a fucking tool

on the take

just like his predecessor

and the one before that one.

this is the biggest thing im disappointed in obama about.

because he fucking knows too.

why did we let anyone try to convince us that Obama wasn’t great

obama

last night the first black president stepped up to the plate
and did what he normally does
he looked around, pointed to deep centerfield
and hit the ball exactly where he pointed
and ran around the bases casually
smiling
as the whole world cheered.

yet for nearly eight years we sat there
and listened to nincompoops and idiots
bitch and whine that
Nobama didn’t do this or did that wrong or foolishly.

people have the shortest memories.

things were so bad in 2007 that when Obama won his first presidential election
some speculated that the Republicans didn’t even really try to win
because they knew that no one could lift us out of the
shitty stinky fucked up hole
that eight years of Bush / Cheney sank us into.

and even though for most of his 8 years he had a do nothing Congress
who said straight up that they were going to do everything they could
to make sure he would only be a one-term president
he ended up being one of the greatest leaders
an America ever had.
twenty million people now have health insurance
millions of gays and lesbians can get married now
and be in the armed forces without having to pretend
our national debt has been reduced
millions of people who were unemployed now have jobs
the stock and real estate markets are booming.

and best of all, the Cubs are on their way to becoming a Dynasty.

if some grumpy old white Republican dude with gray hair and a big belly
had done this
they’d be talking about adding him to Mount Rushmore

never let them convince you
even for a minute
that Obama isn’t spectacular.
they are jealous,
and they should be
on so many levels.

happy birthday, America

Happy birthday to my favorite country
a place where a man born to an African man and a midwestern woman
can go to Harvard, run for president, become president
and despite unprecedented Congressional cockblocking and cowardice,
miraculously pull a nation from a deliberating recession,
while killing tyrants, ending wars,
making the nation freer, healthier, and more prosperous
with style and eloquence.
As a Cub fan I look the other way when I remember he’s a Sox fan.
One day I hope his detractors can look the other way
when they remember
he’s not like them.

Rolling Stone: How do you make sense of the Donald Trump phenomenon?

Louis CK: I’m not gonna tell Americans how to feel — I think you gotta get out of the way of people’s feelings. It’s a self-cleaning system. Whenever anybody says, “The voters are stupid” – well, the voters elected Obama against a war hero and a multimillionaire, which are classic choices for the other side. I have faith in the American people because of that. And if Trump does win, I feel like we will figure it out.

do you know i love you, i do

obama trumpi also love that Obama is having a nice victory lap. he deserves it. no one thought that he could do the things he’s done.

in fact when he won the first time i thought, they just let him win because they didnt wanna clean up the mess that W left him.

but he did clean it up. by himself. and he didn’t even make it look tough. the GOP did their best to obstruct him but he just smiled and said pick a card any card.

and they said we’re not playing this stupid game

he said why not.

they said because if you guess the card you look like Cool Obama always picking the right cards and we look like Dumb Old Sticks In The Muds

he said, cut the pack then.

they said no. because if we cut the pack then you will do something amazing and we’ll look like Dumb Old Bumps on a Log.

and President Obama said, we are all in this together. i ALREADY won the presidency. you’ll never be able to impeach me and i’m not gonna quit, so, you know, if you work With me, it will look like we are both doing this magic and you can add it to the reasons people should re-elect you, because you

actually helped the people who voted for you

and they thought about it for a minute and said, no, we will not pick a card, we will not cut the deck

then Obama said, thats ok, i understand, i mean im just a half white half black man from kenya who

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

i said im half black and half white

NO, THAT OTHER THING YOU SAID!

he said, oh that, well i actually wrote it down on a card, pick one and it’ll be written on it.

YOU WROTE THAT YOU WERE FROM KENYA ON A CARD?

you’ll see when you pick it, the president said and they leapt at the deck

they took a card, it was the Ace of Spades

they frowned and threw it on the ground

of course it landed face up and read:

<3 Hawaii In Da House <3

how bad is the economy?

i took this picture last week but it took me till today to actually see what it was.

this is a billboard for a cable tv special held three months ago.

but whats amazing about it is its on sunset blvd, just west of vine, as people leave the arclight theaters (normal movie ticket price there: $14) or walk one block east of amoeba (the city’s largest record store), they would see that sign. its a very well traveled part of town which is clearly lit at night where tons of people are day and night.

how come you cant sell that space?

people should be fighting for that space yet it waits to get obeyed.

president obama better quit smiling so much and get down to the magic part.

yesterday i bit into the white houses blog

and complained that it wasnt updated enough

one of the comments on digg and in an email was basically hey it just started give em a break, especially since apparently the technology at 1600 penn isnt all that.

and this is what ive gotta say. gone are the days of excuses in the white house yo.

get it done, fist bump, go to the next impossible panic.

its 2009, weve got a remote control car on mars, the last thing that should be half assed in a black white house is the blawwwwwg.

that is the one place where you can strut your stuff in a badass way for free to gazillions.

let people flip phone interview people inside the white house and explain why this happened or what that change is all about. show us the computers with windows 95. lay out the myriads of challenges going on and what the plans are. youre the ones bragging about how transparent youre gonna be – then bust with the multi-daily quick cam youtube blog posts and tell us whats up.

also show some of that little girls pictures of beyonce at the we are one concert.

since my post yesterday the blog has been updated three times. i looked at my reader and once again it showed that several posts had all been published at the same time. i wondered, what was the delay? dont make people think that. and dont have the google reader say things were published at a certain time but your blog says they were spread out.

i dont know whats going on there but its gotta get fixed.

jim gilliam of whitehouse2.org explained that the problem might be due to a variety of reasons

My guess is that they have a fancy new site in the works, but it’s not ready yet, so they are stuck using the old infrastructure from the Bush administration and just don’t know how to make it all work. The current site is based on ASP.NET, meanwhile the campaign was built on more open tools with Blue State Digital. It’s my understanding that BSD turned down the job to run whitehouse.gov because of all the legal restrictions placed on it. And Obama still has not announced his Chief Technology Officer, so they may be lacking solid leadership in this area.

in other online publishing news. friend of the busblog howard owens is part of a sorta historic online lawsuit. he works for a publishing group called GateHouse who is calling foul at the way the Boston Globe is agrigating their content. while most people, including howard, and myself, believe that taking a headline a few paragraphs from a website or blog and putting it on your site is fine if you link back. but GateHouse thinks that because the Globe takes all of their headlines they are making their section front (and possibly some of their content) less valuable. dan kennedy has a great post on it:

Seen from GateHouse’s point of view, a [Boston.com] Your Town site – for instance this one covering the town of Needham – links not just to a few stories, but scoops up every item of interest from GateHouse’s Needham Times, making it unnecessary for anyone to visit the Wicked Local Needham homepage. By republishing the headlines and ledes from GateHouse stories, Your Town, in many cases, is making it unnecessary even to click through. The Times may have grabbed only a small part of each story, but, so this line of thinking goes, it’s grabbed the best part.

this is one of those weird times when i originally thought omg how can they even be suing? and now i think they have a totally interesting case. i really hope theres a lot of discussion about this because aggregation is really important to web 2.0

ps, happy 24th birthday lindsay, thanks for buying the cubs.

people are lined up at the times building again today

the funny thing about that is, you can buy the paper today at any newsstand or newsbox, but people want shopping carts filled with them.

they want whats called “bundles”.

besides the people waiting to buy our papers and the replica plates are folks selling buttons and tshirts. across the street at the corner is someone who i believe is from the long beach press-telegram, because she is selling long beach press-telegram papers to people.

and for once, theres a market for long beach press-telegrams.

good for them.

yesterday we had a big day at the web site, a big day on our blogs, and it looks like today will be a huge day selling the print edition too. i cant say i like the fact that he’s a White Sox fan, but he sure is helping our macro-economy here on spring street.

i know i dont look black but i am

thats why im pretty much disqualified to comment on our first black president.

my sister and i were the only black kids out in the suburbs for much of our time growing up.

in one of the magazines our grandmother subscribed to, Jet, they would list all of the black people who were going to be on tv that week. even though these were the days of The Jeffersons, and Good Times, some weeks there were barely enough names for half of a page – and Jet was a tiny little magazine. a little bigger than your hand.

today i got to support one of the biggest blogs in the world, Top of the Ticket. i added pictures and videos to posts, i even got to write a few. as a bi-coastal team we were liveblogging. reporters photographers video journalists editors copy editors and bloggers covering what wonkette so wryly deemed “the Actual Most Historical Thing Ever, Since the Moon Landing“.

but to me it was still a black man on tv and i wondered how jet would have listed it.

although it was mighty cool to be in the belly of the beast during a day of such dramatic advancement for the perception and reality of minorities in america, my sister wins because she was there, in a chair, in the good section.

even desperately posting a photo of yourself being felt up by two canadian girls while wearing a silk shirt adorned with a variety of ac/dc album covers cant beat that.

although welchy’s hit n run blog came close with their “Obama Inaugurated, Ex-Klansman Collapses” headline

also, ken layne was on fire (nsfw)
