im listening to a panel called “can social media end racism”

although they agree that it cant end it “it’s like brushing your teeth, you can never brush them enough and stop,” but you have to try to keep it from taking over.

they have three goals of social media to spread knowledge: create a refuge, mobilizing your base

earlier they were asked to recall their favorite racist moment online recently. of course the first example includes Sean Hannity. but later Jay Smooth says, “I couldn’t pick out 1 favorite racist moment. Each one is like a snowflake. And every YouTube video is like a blizzard” and then he shows us a youtube thread where people come out of the woodwork to spread the hate and ignorance.

later j smooth steals the show with one of his youtube videos that coaches that you should approach people about “what they did” and “what they said” instead of “who they are”. his blog is called illdoctrine.com.

right now theres a tie as to who’s funnier, him or Angry Asian Man who says that most of what he blogs about is to try to prove to his “own people” that there is racism out there. because, as he says, if his own community has their head in the sand then he’s out there alone trying to fight it.

one of the women, Latoya Peterson of Racialicious, also had a funny quip. she was recalling some of the sexist comments on one of the sites she works on. someone wrote “oh shes just angry because her vagina is so big”. she said that one of the women who read it laughed and said, “yeah that’s why i carry my laptop in it.”

the other woman, Katy Esquivel, is showing an interesting blog The Sanctuary that focuses on migrant issues.

excellent panel. very glad im here.

hey theres a two part interview with me over at BeatBlogging.org

jay rosen is the supervisor of the deal, so i shouldnt be surprised that the interview turned into a good piece

one minor detail, the top blogs at the LAT increased 10-15 times in the last year, not 4 times. what went up 4 times was the amount of pageviews for all LAT blogs. but who’s counting.

on tap for this evening:

sk smith’s panel Suxors at 5pm
LA Tech party at 6:30pm
diggnation afterwards

this is a pretty great slice of whats going on here

when i told people i was traveling on friday the 13th everyone was alll oooooooo

i didnt think id be in any plane crash. but i should have predicted, however, that maybe i should have been nervous about my hotel sorta screwing me over.

no internet.

hi im here for an internet festival.

and im supposed to be covering it.

hi i just discontinued my air card because verizon was charging me $60 a month and i barely used it cuz theres wifi everywhere you go these days.

except in my hotel room.

a room that costs so much money because of its relative location to sxsw ground zero that i originaly thought it was totally worth it but now im thinking you dont get what you pay for.

at least it has a great view.

good news to its relative location is theres perfectly good wifi here despite the fact that everyone is using cell phones and laptops and a variety of other devices.

i am in the adobe day stage cafe right now because of its relative location to food drink and smaller speakers who get up there for 15 minutes and go for it.

in an hour and a half i need to find some wifi so i can commish a live fantasy draft. and then after that i think im gonna see sk smith moderate a panel called Suxorz.

then i think i will drink heavilly.

hopefully for the right reasons.

930pm Room 710 Tia Carrera

stony trippy neverending three man instrumental heavy rock yesicanyesican rhymns might not be your cup of tea. Slowing down and carefully delving into the depths of hendrixs heart might not be your idea of a fun night out on a cold and drizzly night in Austin. But for those of us who aren’t too old yet and who appreciate a touch of Satan in our rock are fully grooving to this no frills evening on the first night of Texas here on red river.

10:45pm tia and i are upstairs at room 710 loving the ozzy tribune band that is now rocking downstairs.

Blggng from the plane.

Jet blue to Austin non stop. Just bought a sandwiich that cost $7.50

But the good news is the truest took me here. We tried to leave early but I Hate being on time for airplanes

We woke up at 7. Got out of bed at 745. Got to the times to drop off my car at 9! Got to the lbc at 930. Departure at 1020. Since it’s now 1012 I should post now

See you in Texas. In the meantime follow me this week on Twitter for the more up to date news

why does sxsw matter?

why am i funding this trip myself? why am i stoked to be going?

because you meet people who tell you things that are equivalent to them predicting the future.

witness these three interviews at the end of a drunken night TWO YEARS AGO in austin, with the Twitter boys as they explain the thing that so many of you have right now: Twitter.

dont know how i got on their mailing list

but the Parents Television Council always tells me the best tv to watch

They write:

File an FCC Complaint Against Fox’s Family Guy!

Should a Sunday night cartoon show YOUR children bestiality, gay orgies and babies eating sperm?

Fox thinks so.

Fox’s perverted cartoon Family Guy showered audiences in filth Sunday, March 8th. This episode was rated aired TV-14 DLSV by Fox, meaning that in the network’s opinion, this content was appropriate for 14-year olds. It aired Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT – only 8:00 p.m. in the Midwest – on the public airwaves that YOU own!

In one scene, husband Peter lies in bed, his naked rear exposed. A horse enters and licks Peter’s rear, as Peter moans in pleasure. “Mmm, what made you come around, Lois? I love you so much. I love you so much, Lois,” Peter groans. The FCC has the DUTY to enforce the law and fine Fox for this gross violation of broadcast decency standards.

Among other atrocities in the episode, Peter warns his family that “some of the milk in the fridge is not milk, it’s horse sperm,” whereupon Baby Stewie eats cereal covered with the “milk”; Peter’s gay lover greets him with news that he has arranged a gay “eleven-way” orgy; and Peter helps his son Chris with math homework:

“One trick I used to use is turning things into a word problem. For example, if there are three glory holes in the bathroom at the club and 28 guys at the circuit party. How many rotations of guys will it take before everybody’s had a turn? Nine, with a remainder of Brent…Brent can’t fit in the glory hole, and that’s why we all like Brent.”

Bestiality. Glory holes. Circuit parties. Gay orgies. Eating horse sperm. This is the kind of “entertainment” Fox thinks is ideal for your kids to see on a Sunday night cartoon.

If you’re sickened at the prospect of YOUR CHILDREN seeing this garbage; if it disturbs you that Fox is using YOUR airwaves, free of charge, to break indecency laws and pump their sewage into YOUR living room; if you’re tired of businesses sponsoring shows that corrupt YOUR kids and YOUR culture, you can TAKE ACTION NOW!

All the famine in the world, disease, lack of health care, and lack of proper education, and these people are focused on tv in regards to children? Ok… i guess. but what do you think the odds are that once TV is cleaned up that they will do things like, i dont know – attack catholic priests who have molested children with the same energies that they attack the boob tube for showing programs like Family Guy and Gossip Girl?
