how to win a playoff game in frisco for your favorite team

14517458_10154572804748057_8901456084229596595_n

it was a beautiful night. instead of sitting in my seat in the upper deck i roamed around taking in the views from everywhere.

14600875_10154572804903057_4628015242811075037_n

outside people wore their AC/DC Giants jerseys

14657507_10154572804783057_1014133193710285550_n

and inside they wore giraffe hats for some reason

14725656_10154572804788057_7880174892037728296_n

i had never been to the new AT&T Park before, but the smells of the garlic fries brought back memories of when i sold hot dogs and beers at The Stick back in ’97. Could it really have been 20 years ago?

TIME FLIES LIKE A MOTHER

14705899_10154572804883057_2233531819663026740_n

there were Cub fans in the house but not many. Giants fans dont sell their tickets. they use them and I appreciate them for that.14721469_10154572804973057_4415155868064844270_n

but as i roamed around nothing felt right. if i stood somewhere and the cubs got a hit, i stayed there, but nothing worked. they couldnt get anything going.

if you remember, back in 2006 when i drove around the country i went to the Bears – Cards game in Arizona. the Bears were losing by 20 points in the 4th quarter. i left a little early and the Bears made an incredible comeback that made Dennis Green freak out in the post game interview.

THE BEARS WERE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE! AND WE LET THEM OFF THE HOOK.

the lesson i thought i learned that night was never leave a game because anything can happen. but when i was at the Giants game i thought to myself, maybe i can help the Cubs make a similar comeback if i just sacrificed my own personal joy for a bigger personal joy and leave.

so i left.

i walked down the street. i tweeted what i was doing. i told everyone i was doing it to give the Cubs luck.

it didnt look good for them, they were down by 3 in the 7th when i left. some dope was 2-hitting them. as i walked through the streets of San Fran i bought an It’s It ice cream.

the plan was to do anything that i didn’t do the night before when the Cubs lost.

so i walked to the parking lot and got in the car and drove across the beautiful Bay Bridge.

nothing.

they were still losing.

i drove south down the East Bay. i was going fast thanks to the lack of traffic.

i had the game on the radio in the car.

i drove and drove.

nothing.

then when i got on the 5 freeway things got better.

we got a hit. then Rizzo walked.

then there were some pitching changes. Contrareous or however you spell his name, our rookie catcher hit a screamer up the middle. two runs scored.

then Javy Baez tied it up. then Jason Heyward gave us the lead.

i was screaming in my car because i knew.

i knew it wasnt the Frisco Bullpen who had blown so many games, who was blowing this one, the most important one.

i knew that it was me. tony pierce. biggest cub fan alive. i had done it.

i was the missing ingrediant and i had to get out of the kitchen and drive all night like springsteen.

14650333_10154572804988057_2119117334272678529_n

and then our flamethrowing closer came in and flamethrew and south of Tracy i pulled over to a truck stop and screamed and honked my horn and danced around my car and thanked the Lord Above because the Cubs had won.

the Cubs Beat the Giants.

In an Even Year.

At thier House.

14590286_10154572805218057_5772951917017745288_n

and Cub fans jumped into the Bay and commandeered sail boats and raised the W flag.

14657351_10154572805308057_9171916141567053405_n

and on the field the Cubs celebrated.

and in the Benz, hoarse, i called my mom and she was all, they did what?

THEY DID IT ALL MA!

yeah i was at game three in frisco last night, who’s asking?

14572237_10154567431573057_3838001143184704010_n

got the ticket off stubhub for $170 as did this young guy who works at pebble beach, originally from arlington heights

14591803_10154567431468057_5324263014894502785_n

i was nervous it was gonna be a boring pitching duel. Madbum has crazy numbers in the playoffs. plus he’s always mad about everything. but as i sat up there in the chilly crisp air i thought, what if he’s actually just super sad that the Cubs havent won the world series in over a century?

14600938_10154567431563057_8205437010542626624_n

and i also thought how worthless the scoreboard is at AT&T. it was my first visit to the park

14650083_10154567431518057_333387410646872524_n

they did a good job decorating it and making it “the scene”. lots of weird angles and faux antique touches. the irony of tearing down actual old buildings to develop new buildings that you spend millions on to look old was not lost in me. and when i asked a very loud Giants fan in front of me what he thought about our weird trend, he showed me his faux rings

14650102_10154567431533057_9218479922969944103_n

he was there with his daughter and her friend and we were all cracking up when out of the blue he’s utter a school girl cheer on like Ball 1:

G-double-O D E-Y-E
GOOD EYE!

and he’d punch the sky with the orange rag they gave to all the fans as we entered.

14650342_10154567431488057_8486844832322213128_n

no seriously, they called it a Rag

14657458_10154567431638057_459688239713652159_n

sat next to these two dudes from the Castro who were fun too. one of them was keeping score, the other works at Apple. Everyone was cool except for this old guy in front of us who kept looking back trying to give me dirty looks because me and the golf guy were talking about every little detail of Pebble.

Greens Fees for 18 holes: $500-700
Caddy: $80 + tip
Cart: $40 unless you’re staying at the resort
Resort room: $600-$800 a night
And you have to stay at the Resort for a min of 2 days if you want a guaranteed tee time.

The Cubs at that time were knocking their boy Mad Bum around and Jake Arietta had pulled a 3 run homer and things were looking dire for the home team.

Finally i told the old man when he looked at me again, “it seems like we are bothering you?”

“I thought we were here to talk BASEBALL!” he growled.

I said, “we can talk baseball if you really want”, and tipped my beer to the dumbass scoreboard.

He took a little walk.

14666316_10154567431618057_3145405667112934683_n

There was no shortage of bunting or drama. The Giants ended up with the lead somehow and then in the top of the 9th pretty boy MVP Kris Bryant just barely cleared the Chevron ad in left tying up the game and leaving me hoarse from screaming in the suddenly silent stadium.

The game went 13 innings. Some batboy pinchhitter drove a long double to center off Mike Montgomery who had been in since the 10th. And it was a long walk to Market Street to the 5 Fulton back up to the Panhandle.

Gonna make that old man super pissed tonight. I’m in the same exact seat.

im in frisco, ive come for your food and one win

chinese food

last night i drove up the 5 and listened to the debate and arrived and it was cold and i got to Mark’s house and had a great chat with his son. smart kid. no dummy.

then i walked to haight ashbury (only 5 blocks away) then walked down Haight remembering about a girl i used to make out with.

i kept thinking, did we have sex? but i dont think we ever did. she was always so uptight. one day i asked, why do you even have me over here, you hate me. she said, i like you more than anyone in this lousy town. and then we’d make out listening to sinatra.

at one point she moved to NYC and i visited her and she was sour to me there too. forget her name. but she was pretty and a great kisser.  (i didnt forget her name).

kept walking. people frowned at me with my cubs hat. whatever. theyre gonna give you a reason to frown. walked down market to where Valencia starts. they sure cleaned up that little ratty area under the freeway. and a few other spots. but one thing i noticed as i walked up through the Mission and eventually to Mission / 24th: lots of my favorite joints are still there.

for all the handwringing about gentrification and the dot comming of Frisco, so much has remained. sure there are some douchey coffee and taco joints, but many of the bars are still there, even the record stores. lots of my favorite food spots, little markets, little stores. all still here 20 years later.

if a Chinese Food & Donuts store in the heart of the Mission can survive on a very busy and valuable corner for 30+ years, then gentrification isn’t as bad as they say it is here.

frisco is a place that i have been coming to since i was a teenager. weirdly there is less change here than in the suburb where i grew up in Illinois. the only truly damning oh-fuck-you development was Whole Foods moving in where the Safeway used to be on Haight right by the Park.

ok now i have to take an Uber to the ballpark to watch my Cubbies sweep this shit.

and if they win, im gonna drive home tonight.

my boss let me go home a little early yesterday

bill murray i aint afraid of no goatswhich was good because i was a space cadet

i couldnt eat, i couldnt work well.

when i got home i took off my clothes, laid in my bed, then put new clothes on

and then walked around my neighborhood.

just walked and listened to Fall Out Boy

i bought a burrito somewhere i never ate before

i just walked.

i was afraid to go home, i was afraid to drive anywhere, i was afraid.

then my man Todd texted me from Wrigley

basically saying he was scared too,

so i turned my phone on, tuned in the radio broadcast and listening to WGN

the station i grew up on,

while i sat on a bench in Los Feliz

it soothed me.

so i walked home.

pitchers duel.

8th inning, i tweeted that Javy Baez has power

and right on cue he bashed one right into the mouth of the wind

he stared at it like it was soaring to Wisconsin

but that old, cold, mean mean wind blew it back

but then the ghost of Harry Caray distracted the wind, just for a scootch

and the ball landed in the Left Field basket.

“nothing but net” tweeted the Cubs

and that’s all it took to win the game

thanks to a beautiful 9th inning of flamethrowing by the closer Chapman

the rest of the night was watching Donald Trump fallout

and me not believing how good all of it could feel

ALL OF IT

put on your war paint

cubs lineup in a few hours the Cubs begin their march through the playoffs.

their lineup makes me nervous.

their two big boppers are batting 2nd and 3rd. then you have two infielders in the power positions.  (yes Z is playing left but thats because Baez is in the game).

Z had 18 dingers in the regular season which is below average AND he was hitless against Cueto, who is on the mound for the Giants.

so why is he batting cleanup? who knows? that’s why we pay Joe Maddon the big bucks.

that is why he wears the glasses and i write the tweets.

that is why the Cubs had the best record in baseball and i am eyeing the clock seeing when i can go home to watch.

me personally my lineup would be Dexter / Javy / Bryant /Rizz / Russ / Hey / Zob / Ross. You might get Rizzo one less AB than having him bat 3rd but at least theres some pop in the middle of the lineup.

DONT YOU SEE WHY I AM LOSING MY MIND IN ANTICIPATION?

I need a drink.

I need two drinks.

How am I still at home?

Where is my mind?

Will the Cubs win by 8 or just 1?

Will Ditka be there?

Will Ditka pitch?

How did the Native Americans handle the emotions of the playoffs? Ahhhhhh!!!!

im thinking about going to Frisco next week

R2D2yesterday the Giants beat the Mets in extra innings which gives them the right to play the Cubs in the first round of the actual playoffs.

thats good news and bad for the Cubs because the Giants have this weird thing going where they have won the World Series in each of the last three even-years.

eerily, this is 2016.

so not only do we have to break the Curse of the Billy Goat, the Sports Illustrated cover curse, but we also have to be the first team to beat the Giants in an even year.

no problemo.

so tomorrow and Saturday the two teams square off at the Friendly Confines, kicking off the best-of-five League Division Series.

on Sunday they fly to San Fran where they play two games at AT&T Park on Monday and Tuesday.

A mere 5 hour drive from where I blog to you today.

I have some vacation days coming my way but i was hoping to save those for the World Series. However.

Frisco.

Half a day to get up there. See the game. Tickets are only $80.

Sleep beneath the Golden Gate with a good book?

Wake, head over to the Squat and Gobble? Stumble over to the Zeitgeist for a couple of beers with some bikers? Chow down on some Chinese at the House of Nan King. Head over to the bleachers for another game. Tickets are only $90. Don’t drink. Drive back down to LA?

If one gets too tired, maybe sleep half way there around Bakersfield?

Thank the Lord for this matchup?

And hope the Dodgers are successful in their round versus the Nats so I can see the Cubbies at Chavez Ravine.

Weirder things have happened.

every day i drive to beverly hills through hollywood

come witha few blocks south of Paramount Pictures,

a movie and tv studio, that among other things, shoots stories about super heroes

are some real heroes that, when i see them,

make me cry inside.

i resist telling this to you because i dont want you to cry.

but today i was feeling especially emotional for some reason,

and when i saw them, i seriously considered jumping out of my car and hugging all of them.

every day i drive by a school for blind kids. little kids. maybe 6, 7 years old.

and theyre out on the fucked up LA sidewalks, arched due to old tree roots, and they have great big smiles and cute little dresses or sweaters with Lego characters on em

and folding walking canes with the red tips.

next to them are the heroes. young men and women with great patience showing them how to get around with their walking sticks.

and im telling you the kids are sooooo happy. they dont know the trees are changing colors or the sky is ridiculously california blue or that my car needs a wash.

all they know is they’re seeing the world in this new way, right now. and theyre beaming. some are laughing. and the heros are laughing too.

so today i was at a stop sign by the school and i wanted to roll down the window and just yell I LOVE WHAT YOURE DOING, FUCK YEAH RIGHT ON FUCK YEAH GO CUBS!

but i didnt wanna startle the little ones or kill their vibe. they didnt need me.

so when i wrote what i wrote earlier today about our highest good is being of service to others, thats almost exactly what i was talking about

except maybe not as dramatic as literally helping the blind.

but helping.

and you know its working when you see the gigantic smile on both yr faces.

what is life

hot tub

is it a series of tubes?

is it a fancy house, a swappable wife, a six figure sports car in the garage

the ability to get on national television and lie and lie and lie during a job interview?

or is life about ignoring all the crazy bells and whistles

and realizing that the highest plane of human existence is helping others?

i was driving the kids around usc yesterday and i had this incredibly beautiful junior business major in my car

and she was super stressed out.

any time her phone alerted her that someone had just sent her a text message she quickly grabbed her phone

like it had just shocked her bare legs.

she told me that she was worried that soon she would have to try to find a job.

i said, “obama has fixed all that. a biz degree from SC pretty much guarantees that you’ll be hired right away.”

she said, “all obama has done is create blue collar jobs, though.”

i was like, “you wanna be VP of a company the year after you graduate?”

and she looked at me like i knew how to accomplish just that.

but when it dawned on her that it was rhetorical, she sullenly looked out the window

at the passing Chipotle

and sighed the sigh of a 19 year old

who will Never be able to afford those Louboutins.

like ever.
