eight years ago today we launched the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar blog

kareemhave i told you im the luckiest man in the world? i am.

it seems like just yesterday, i had held the position of Blog Editor at the LA Times for just a few months when i got an email from the Sports Editor Randy Harvey who said the NBAs top scorer was interested in blogging for our paper.

because i was new i assumed that this happened all the time and it was going to happen all the time. but alas it was the one and only true celeb who would blog regularly for us. and despite the hiccups that we had it was a dream come true.

as a kid i idolized #33. the book about his life was my favorite book in grade school. so to work with him on this project was almost as surreal as being the damn blog editor of my favorite paper.

my terms were simple, if he really wanted it to be a hit he had to have a real blog post every day. was he up for it? he told me he was. he told me about all the books he’d written and all the interests he had. and sure enough he DID have a lot of interests and he was able to mesh those with the current events of the day and he churned out a fascinating, controversial, edgy blog that was much more than just about sports.

when Herbie Hancock won a bunch of Grammys, boom there was a recent picture of Kareem (a huge jazz fan) with Herbie. when one of the Manning Brothers was in the Super Bowl, there was a picture of Kareem with both brothers. he wrote about movies, health, politics, race, and yes, even sports.

my belief about a blogging athlete was changed because of my experience with Kareem. at first i thought it would be difficult because most athletes and musicians have this image that they feel compelled to uphold through LACK of communication to the world. i thought it would be hard for someone to be able to write every day because of their schedule, but even though Kareem’s calendar was packed, he made time for it.

and best of all he was not afraid to keep it real.

over the years i spent there we had other athletes who asked to do what Kareem did and i asked them a few questions: can you keep it real, can you write every day, are you gonna be freaked out if and when the commenters turn on you? they all backed down.

here are a few of the mentions the blog got when it launched.

rock on, Cap!

do you know i love you? i do?

92its 92 in the shade. what year is this? where are you? where am i? in the hills of beverly. texas tea. black gold.

its so hot the winter is vacationing here. its so hot el nino was all, nah it’s too hot.

its so hot my computer really is broken. unrepairable says the repairman.

its so hot im thinking about putting some grammer things in my words.

the computer is so on the fritz im writing to you via esp, because i love you.

the busblogs been rolling for a million years so its seen its fair share of broken computers, effed up internet, injuries.

you just rub some dirt, tussin, or spit on it and shake it off, theres a game we gotta play.

former cub Moises Alou used to pee on his hands which i was thinking about doing but i dont think we need to.

i think i just need to break open my credit card and get that macbook air.

i was gonna use that money for something extravagant and wonderful.

like Coachella?

like SXSW?

like a waterbed?

maybe a little computer is the right move after all.

i do?

dear tony, would you ever leave LA?

LAsure, for the right opportunity.

i love california. i’ve lived here for the last 31+ years.

today, in the second week of february, it’s nearly 90 degrees today.

the sky is blue, im wearing a short sleeved shirt.

if my cats wouldnt sneak out, i would have my windows open as i snooze tonight.

yesterday i walked a few miles in the middle of the night because i was in such a great mood and it was gorgeous outside.

i listened to the Clash and Kiss and all these great tunes via Spotify and i didnt want my little walk to end.

could i do that in NYC? probs but i woulda been frozen.

could i do that in Japan? probs but i woulda stopped at a bunch of sushi bars.

hollywood has been my home since april of 2001, i know where everything is and where everything used to be

but in a weird way that now makes it boring.

in a weird way i wanna learn new things.

dont you wanna be learning all the time?

isnt that why kids are so happy?

isnt that why they grow? cuz their brains are giving them new life?

isnt it awesome when we meet someone new and they show us their house and theres like a giant projection tv in their house surrounded by all these VHS tapes of all these great movies? isnt it fun to look at all of those movies? isnt it fun to walk into their back yard and sip on a beer as they smoke a cigarette?

isnt it nice to smell the smoke in the hair of a girl you barely know while she lets you get close enough to smell all of that?

LA has let me nuzzle up to it for quite a while and trust me, im honored, but the Good Lord has given us a big big globe to explore, Dora

dont you think we should get out of our bubble, homer?

i do.

everythings ok

leo weeknd

i didnt bet the house on the Panthers

i didnt buy a house and then bet it on the Panthers either.

i was thinking about it, but the Lord loves me and told me to have brunch with two lesbians  instead of watching the first quarter

when i got home i just tweeted it and enjoyed it  and realized oh yeah thats why i never bet on sports: im terrible at it.

funny thing happend though. after i was done tweeting, sorta like at the end of the Blues Brothers,

my computer just fell apart in a dozen pieces and died right there on my bed.

so blogging will be limited.

my fantasy hoops teams will be half staffed.

and i’ll probably get some sleep tonight.

today was our Oscars Noms Luncheon. it was cool. lots of your favorite filmmakers were there.

it was warm outside by the pool. like 80+ degrees.

theres a lot of great pictures from todays event over on our Facebook and Instagram.

I Snapchatted a bunch of it.

but now im super tired, my feet hurt, and i just want some Thai food and fall asleep.

xoxoxo

super bowl prediction

cam newton

Carolina 44, Denver 12

if i was a betting man id be in Vegas right now.

firstly i love Las Vegas, but secondly to bet everything I could on Cam and his Panthers.

much love to Peyton but he’s running on fumes.

they beat the Pats and thats nice, but the Pats were banged up and had zero running game

Cam’s Panthers are not banged up and not only can they run

but he can run too.

pretty sure the cheerleaders can run three.

can Peyton run? uh….

five points may as well be zero points cuz all its says is as long as the Panthers are a head by more than a FG you get your house back if you bet it on the Super Bowl

which i would if i was a gambler with a house who knew a bookie who would accept that parlay

which thankfully i do not because thats scary bc Cam

could

get hurt in the first quarter i suppose and then youre homeless

which is pretty much why i keep my bets small, local,

and the winner buys lunch.

no one at work would bet me lunch that Cam is gonna lose this game

this song, this performance, gives me, what the kids call, feels

Lady Gaga is singing the National Anthem today at the Super Bowl

i’m sure it will be fantastic

but i wish they’d also let her sing this tune while they show a montage of what it took for these two teams to get to this stage

because both of them really are on the edge of glory

and since she’s there, may as well let her rock out

most drivers dont enjoy doing Uber pools, but i make due

brazilians and brunchers

what drivers dont like about pools is you dont get paid for the time there are two sets of people in your car.

meanwhile you have to get to two different places, wait for each group, and then drop off two times.

so basically double the work for half the rate.

“smart” drivers will never accept an uber pool, but heres what i think.

i think none of us are getting rich anyways, and some money is better than no money

so if you decline certain rides or all rides in hopes for the great big payday

that you psychically know is gonna happen, then thats you.

me, im here to drive, lets drive and see what happens.

today what happened was two very funny brentwood brunchers uber pooled to arena on main and on the way we picked up a brazilian mom daughter team going to the beach.

i made $17, it took about 17 minutes

and i woulda driven them for the rest of the day but

i needed to get back to hollywood

to pick up my xbi suit.

Sly Stallone: “Never let anyone see you frown. Ever.”

sly

You know why? Because you can’t read a smile, but you can definitely read a frown, and people do not want to see other people who are young, handsome, beautiful, talented, and making good money acting like they’ve got gigantic problems. Frowning. I mean, you want problems? Go out there into the world; there’s billions of problems. So I’d probably tell myself: never, ever, ever publicly feel sorry about yourself, talk about your terrible upbringing, mope, frown, or complain. I don’t want to hear about it. Start to get involved in other people’s lives. Be supportive of them. Be charitable. That’s the first thing. Serving other people, that’s not only the right thing to do for the world, but it’s the best thing you can do for yourself. I really believe that.

from the Bio interview

only 5 days on the market and the Cubs’ spring training cap is basically sold out

cubs spring training cap

unless you wear a size 6 7/8, you’re outta luck if you want a Cubs official spring training cap

the cubs appear to be the favorites to win the world series

and are probably faves to dominate through most of this century

after graciously giving much of the last one to the yankees, dodgers and cardinals

but this one is ours and everyone knows it so when this cute little number hit the digital shelves

they flew off like hotcakes (but why would you do that to a hotcake?)

foolishly i thought the league woulda made tons of these, so i’ve gotta find one somewhere

maybe my mom can hunt me down one back home in illinois

your boy wears a 7 1/8.

well i procrastinated again last night

rolling stone kanyei didn’t reinvent the wheel AGAIN as i planned to.

i have this weird love hate thing with making super great things. i get nervous. lightning will strike, i assume.

sometimes it does.

when i was in college i would tune in to the radio station of inspiration and LO great stuff would flow right into me.

it wasnt me. it was something Else. something better. something smarter. something cooler. something with a better way with words than 20 yr old tony.

and it frightened me like if one was working the Ouiji board and it started spelling out words youd never heard of so you write it down and then you realize the message is being told in french and backwards.

and you think: i barely know French, let alone backwards french.

so i laid off tuning in that channel for a while. but the problem is sometimes you wanna hear what that stations playing because it IS beautiful music after all. but it’s hard to find it. its like not where its always supposed to be. and it takes longer to get there, but when youre there omg youre there alright. but then before you know it it’s over. so hopefully youve gathered all the manna you can because it aint probably gonna be there tomorrow.

so thats i think what the problem is about writing this thing down. i know its great. i know its a win win for all parties. its just whats really gonna happen when it happens. so not only is the creation an energy sucking spiritual emotional journey but then youve gotta deal with the aftermath.

the whole thing makes me not wanna do it. but the weirdness is i dont think anyones gonna do it unless i do it. and if someone did it theyd make a crappy version of it. and mine will be coming from a place of love and theres will be from a place of greed. how do i know this? because everything else theyve made has come from greed which is why theyre not even thinking about this petrified forest of love.

i gotta think like kanye: just produce, just create, put on some funny pants, and create more. dont think so much.
