although i appreciate the California DMV for trying to make it harder

for underage drivers from drinking, i dont think this new vertical license is going to do it.

first of all most people dont just use White Out and a typewriter to create fake IDs from existing licenses the way they did it in my day.

they are going to use a real ID and alter the photo.

or use a real ID and not alter the photo since we all know our drivers license photos rarely look like us.

just the other day i was drinking with a young lady and upon entering the establishment the bouncer looked at me, looked at my ID, looked at my age, looked at me, and said BARNEY YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS! they were shocked that i was nearing the age of retirement but looked so. damn. good.

part of that was the fact that i looked so damn bad on my license.

the kids are going to drink no matter what we do, and if the state really wanted to crack down on underage boozing the first thing they should do is crack down on fraternities and sororities where binge drinking among minors is rampant and has been rampant since the times Greeks ruled the earth.

you know what else would slow down on underage drinking? the legalization of weed.

but thats another blog post for another day.

matt welch, not typically one to defend the acts of The Man

did just that last night

welchie’s bro David Carr of the new york times took a magnifying glass to some of the practices and accusations of the management of Tribune Corp, the company that owns the Chicago Tribune and LA Times. there were many unnamed sources, old stories, and questionable actions.

welch, a libertarian, and the editor of the libertarian Reason magazine, asked the simple question “Does it Matter That the Tribune Co. Is Run By Frat Dicks?

while there are many in the blogosphere and media world who are rooting against Trib management and cheered on the NYT’s 4,000 word shot across the bow, welch says that there were several angles to the Sam Zell-led Trib that the Times conveniently left out.

And the most undercovered L.A. Times media story of all? The paper, as Brian Doherty, Katherine Mangu-Ward, and even a reluctant Tim Cavanaugh have all recently noted here, has been bringing it of late, plunging into real and impactful tough-nosed coverage of local power structures, while taking the whole “website that publishes a newspaper” thing seriously enough that both traffic and quality have grown through the roof.

Did that happen in spite of Zell? Because of him, at least in part? Now that would be a media story that would interest me beyond the rubbernecking pleasure of hearing about frat-boy antics by managers who never bothered learning the native dialect.

welchie as always reminds us that life is not a black and white ansel adams photo of a pretty tree in front of a mountain, but often its a cubist abstract with many sides and intricate details whose nuances are just as rewarding to study as is the overall image. and for that he rules.

your favorite lil dutch girl got a new tattoo!

but sadly it doesnt say busblog

yes one of the hottest girls ive ever met, JustAGirl got inked up last night

so to celebrate i asked her to share some info with you

JaG: I haven’t been up to much did a 10 day detox from hell, hoping I won’t get sick this winter (as I did last winter and the year before that). I’ve got some great drugs in fridge and no one to do them with 🙁 magic mushrooms

busblog: Detoxing from….?

JaG: detoxing from everything toxic, no booze, no fat, lots of beans. it was not my favorite thing to do. At all.

busblog: wait, your bf wont shroom with you?

JaG: oh he will eventually, but shrooms are his least favorite drugs and they’re my favs! I was suppose to do them with a “friend” and then she stood me up. I think that was the first time someone stood me up! and I had awesome drugs!!! I mean, how did that happen??

busblog: hows things with the dutch girls?

JaG: It’s been months since I’ve last been with a girl and I don’t miss it now but we all know that’s just a matter of time 😉

busblog: speaking of, how’s work as a runway model?

JaG: work is awesome and busy

busblog: ok what music are you rocking out to?

JaG: For some reason I like Patrick Watson and Sia and Bob Dylan always makes me happy too

busblog: old Dylan? new?

JaG: mostly old

JaG: I’m working on getting my earlobes stretched

busblog: please dont

JaG: not much! just a few mm

busblog: only annoying dudes in Frisco should do such things. leave your beautiful face alone

because im a zillion years old

ive seen almost every SNL

back in the old days it was originally called Saturday Night (which is why old Chevy Chase intros have him saying “Live from New York, it’s ‘Saturday Night'”.

although the skits were usually cutting and funny, i usually stayed tuned for the musical guests who were almost always great.

last Saturday Kanye West did something that hasnt been done in a very long time on SNL, he wowed the audience. he was creative and fascinating, and turned that bland small stage into something different and artistic and sexy.

not since David Bowie stood in a sarcophagus have i seen something so compelling in the musical spot that i rewound it over and over to take in its majesty.

often people ask me what i would love to do after i leave the Times (leave yr resumes in your computers, haters, i aint ever leaving) and i think id want to either be

1. the guy who sets up the schedules for major league baseball
2. the editor of Playboy
3. the guy who figures out who will be the musical guest of SNL

because there could be so much improvement in each of those roles, and i just may be the man to do the job. (after i am much much older.)

people may not realize but there was a daisy princess

who was critical to the early development of this site that you are now reading

the other day she got to meet one of her favorite people of all times

ms gwen stefani from the popular group no doubt

im very happy for her.

i wonder if she will take advantage of the live chat we are doing this afternoon with the celeb she named her lil daughter after, milla jovovich?

theres some things you simply cant make me do

and it makes me wonder, am i sometimes a royal prick?

sometimes i feel like im so nice and other times i think god was i born in the depths of hades itself?

like i’ll be at a bar minding my own business and some dude will look at me with a stupid look on his fat face and say something dumb and all will be great until he claps.

and that clap will just make me wanna fight him. and im not 18 years old, i might actually lose the fight. plus i dont really want to fight BUT I DO some nimrod will clap with that stupid look on his face and theres nothing more i wanna do but fight.

and his buddy is there staring too and clapping and it makes me wonder about automation

and reflexes. and jungian philosphies.

like are the spirits of hundreds of years of tony pierces inside my soul waiting to come out? did those spirits have to fight their way to the 21st century and there they are right on the edge, knowing something i dont know, seeing into the future, there to defend something that doesnt need to be protected but is totally willing to bust with the preemptive strike.

which is so unlike me because if you knew me youd know that all i want to do is wear funny clothes that have no business being coordinated a certain way, be tangled with a pretty girl on the couch and watch ridiculous tv until someone knocks on the door to deliver food.

and then i wanna go to a rock show in hopes that my mind will be blown.

last thing i wanna do is strike a stranger.

for clapping.

but i get insane when i watch football.

breakfast should always be served all day

girls should say yes to every request that i deliver
rock should return to rock n roll radio
books should cost ten dollars or less
sick people should be allowed to take any medication their doctor prescribes
monopolies should be outlawed meaning if Weezer tickets go on sale i should have a choice where i buy those tix online
third parties should be embraced
keg parties should be fully embraced
the internet should be free
love should be really free
people should be allowed to pay for anything, even love
a man should be allowed to paint his house any color he wants
children should be given guitars and laptops when they turn fourteen
cigarettes should be outlawed, except for the candy ones
condoms should be free
like smiles
and blogging

dear this week

how you gonna beat last week?

last week started with da bears winning ugly on monday night football which lead to me buying drinks for so many people at the hot babe bar that i had a little hangover on tuesday

we wont talk about what happened last night

wednesday was sushi with sarah and ali followed by sonic youth and pavement on thursday with ali

friday was zz top and tom petty at the bowl with the truest followed by lady gaga and yoko ono on saturday

yes you heard me right, yoko and gaga and perry farrell with mike watt

and Joseph Gordon-Levitt from third rock with two angels

and the RZA from wu tang and kim and thurston from sonic youth and carrie fisher and vincent gallo and sean lennon who played guitar and bass and piano and drums so well we didnt at first think it was him. easily the most interesting show ive seen all year.

and then last night was Allen at karisas house with her oldest brother and his wife and many friends

and bbq and beer and stars on yr head

and giant pixie sticks and lies and booze

and hot dogs and burgers and polish food and 7-11 cheese

and little dogs who peaced out and semi ran away during all of it because she didnt get enough food.

this week you have a tough act to follow lets see what you can do

october is the month of love

most people think its february but most people are wrong. (duh)

its not the change of seasons, the cooling off of the sweltering temps, or the excitement about christmas being just two months away.

october is the month of love because of the stars. venus, specifically.

libra = october and libra is ruled by venus the goddess of love.

love is different from sex (which is november, so get ready)

love is warm and fuzzy and comfy and beautiful and romantical and sweet.

its floating in a warm pool on your back on a partly cloudy day

just enough clouds to block the sun and look interesting as you doze off

knowing that the nanny is tucking the kids off to their naps

and the phone is successfully out of juice.

love is the piano on the jackson 5s abc

love is playing with your nephew and niece when they wake up and holding them upside down over the pool

love is eating philly cheese steaks in philly on a semi upset stomach and it doesnt kill you as you ride a two hour bus back to manhattan

love is knowing you get to write to the sweetest audience in the world

love is just enough humidity that it moisturizes the hair of the girl youre making out with in the bleachers of wrigley field unsure if what youre feeling is lust or an old style beer buzz

its the smell of bacon wrapped hotdogs after a zztop show

but mostly love is knowing that you ruined everything for the san diego padres

who ruined everything for you twentysix years ago.

love is a crazyass bicycle ride through a trippy freak show

enjoy the breeze.
