bill plaschke has had a pretty good week

on tuesday he wrote an Anti-Michael Vick story that has been shared over 71,000 times on Facebook.

today he wrote an eye-opening column on Big Joe McDonnell who despite consistently getting sports exclusives hasnt had a radio host gig in years and has sadly been relegated to quickie news updates on KNX newsradio.

he’s lost hundreds of pounds and, unfortunately, his momentum.

Plaschke frames Big Joe’s weight thusly:

Joe McDonnell weighed 740 pounds. That is not a misprint. Visiting players would gasp. Insensitive fans would jeer. Everywhere he lumbered, somebody would stare.

He was so big, local teams gave him a special chair without arms so he could sit at their press tables and eat in their press rooms. He was so big, his size eventually became part of his name.

Big Joe. The Big Nasty. For nearly two decades beginning in the early 1980s, the radio personality eclipsed the Los Angeles sports-talk radio scene with his information, insight and indomitable presence.

hard to believe he cant find any love at ESPNLA or Sat radio.

“life is too short to get all serious and not have fun”

in todays paper August Brown reluctantly grants Usher Michael Jackson’s crown.

“For better or worse, Usher is the last man standing in the field of nimble, pop-theater R&B. And he’s making the most of this unique lack of competition.”

not so fast, Mr. Brown, perhaps you’ve overlooked Sean Stephenson who dances better in a wheelchair than ive ever hoped to dance atop two legs.

i wont admit to the circumstances surrounding why i watched Glee the other night

but you can probably guess what was twisting my arm.

i cant say that ive ever liked gweneth, and when someone said that she was at UCSB when i was there, i said sorry but pretty much 2,000 girls looked like her when i was there.

which might be why she dropped out pretty quickly,

but maybe she knew she was going to be the star of stage and screen in a matter of years.

the college let her in, rumor has it, because a very good friend of the family, michael douglas, a ucsb alumn put in a good word for her.

all i know is she surprised me the other night, her singing wasnt bad, her dancing was cute, and her outfits were perfect.

she didnt show a wide range of acting prowess in the hour long episode but i dont think thats really the point of glee.

i was entertained, and for all of you out there dreading turning 38 one day, ms paltrow has met it head on and appears to be handling it pretty well.

even surrounded by a bunch of 20somethings in cheerleader outfits.

today is ali millers birthday

shes 24.

born to new york jews who made their way to the promise land (the valley), ali has been enamored with video games, death metal, and japanese fetish vids since she hit puberty.

when i first met her at an LAist bbq i told her she was probably at the wrong shindig because no way could she be the ali miller who i had corresponded with via email.

one thing led to another and soon she was at the LA Times’ Metromix offices writing cover stories and then being on the cover.

suffice it to say, she was making me and LAist look good.

before we knew it Ali was gone and working on the wessssside for a video game company or the Japanese tourism bureau or someone, who knows who, all we know is she was no longer brightening the halls of the Times and sharing inappropriate discussions with Sarah and I at lunch.

we missed her so.

a few months ago she talked about a new video game company that she swooned over and deemed The Future of Gaming.

Monday she started working there.

happy birthday Ali – party up!

i often think what my life would be if i wasnt a born again Christian

for starters id probably be a dick.

then id have tattoos for days.

id probably also be sadder and directionless. not that i have all that amazing of a direction now, but at least i know what i want to be when im dead: in heaven.

im sure i would have dabbled in a life of crime.

and i probably would have been a Sox fan.

and id have a gun.

and id probably have an ulcer.

and i would eat even worse than i eat now.

who knows, i might be dead.

its funny though because often i hear about people in jail who see The Light, like the author of Pimp, Iceberg Slim, who became a believer once he get locked up.

so maybe all roads would have led me to believe in Jesus.

who knows. all i know is im happy about it, but im sad i dont have a sweet tattoo like our server at Maggiano’s who sported this nice one to honor Ron Santo.

if you go to the Auto Show

you can win a car from the LA Times

no not a fancy race car or a luxury import, but a vehicle thats easy to park

and one that wont suck up a lot of gas.

if you go to the Auto Show and see this Smart Car filled with LA Times newspapers

and if you successfully guess how many newspapers are in the car, then you win it.

just that simple.

just that difficult.

for those of you who arent anywhere near LA, who just happen to read this humble blog, if you want to put your guesstimation in the comments below, i will tell you how close you were once the number is released.

bon chance!

gwar is one of my favorite bands of all

seeing them live is like fully experiencing what heavy metal was meant to evolve into.

problem is gwar’s music is uninspired, bland, predictable, and soulless.

their best moments on cd are when theyre lifting the lines from other bands, particularly N.W.A

meanwhile their best moments live are when they’re chopping the heads off of fantastically grotesque creatures who then spurt endless streams of “blood” into the adoring mosh pit below.

but the music is terrible and its only getting worse.

what needs to be done is a rock n roll intervention.

if the top 20 metal bands and hard rock groups wrote one song for Gwar – a good song – they could go tour for the next thousand years and not bore audiences (which seems impossible, but its true).

Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Styx, soooo many bands tour off 3-4 songs. If Gwar had 10 seriously good ones heavy metal would be saved.

And blood would flow forever.

But last night at the house of blues we left early after an hour of the same old same old.

Such a shame.
