the easiest way you can help a film that can help everyone

you may remember this interview i did with my great friend AJ in january. she is muscle behind At Your Cervix, the documentary about making pelvic exams comfortable and respectful.

the film shows some controversial and revolutionary approaches to teaching doctors how to better treat the women that they examine.

aj and “at your cervix” is in the last stages of finishing up and they need some funding to complete everything. either you can flow them some cash via paypal

or you can do something that wont cost you anything other than about 45 seconds of your time:

a site called Ideablob is giving $10,000 away to an idea (like this film) that gets the most votes. to vote for At Your Cervix, you just register with ideablob, all they ask for is a username and a password and an email address. then they send you a confirmation email which you click. then you vote. it all takes under a minute.

so help out women everywhere by helping out aj and this great film.

happy sunday. cubs are tearing the cover off the ball.

and its time for the answers of axe tony

Jorge: Greetings from Spain, Tony. I have a question for you. Are we all NUTS?

yes we are all nuts. all of us. you me the president the next president the president of nbc who even on a saturday decided to make those of us on the west coast wait till 11pm to watch history, cub fans, sox fans, those who believe that true love will prevail, those who believe in rock, christians, atheists, those who dont buy smokey and the bandit trans ams because they dont have airbags, super hot babes who dont get aids tests, youngsters who dont use condoms Every time, people who work out every day, people who dont work out every day, those who eat too much, those who think that its better to live to 100 even though everyone knows those last 20 years are filled with death and pain and suffering and misery and loneliness and misunderstanding and ageism, those who make “chinese eyes” and think that because many in their nation think that thats not racist that the world wont think its racist, and those who think that because things are offensive in their home country they must be racist everywhere else. yes we are all crazy and thats one reason im glad that god let me live here. i fit right in.

Matt Welch: Finish this puzzle: What The Replacements were to the ’80s, and what Pavement was to the ’90s, ________ is to the aughts.

Tsar. truly underrated. too talented for the masses. good loud but best when being subtle.

Alys: Which do you consider to be the most influential year in music ever? Which decade?

The year is easy – 1980. Check out these albums that were released in the US during that 12 month period: Back in Black, The River, Dirty Mind, London Calling (US), Women and Children First, Zenyatta Mondatta, Saved, Sandinsta!, Black Market Clash, Los Angeles, Emotional Rescue, Get Happy, Boy, Boys Don’t Cry, Heartattack and Vine, Glass Houses, British Steel, End of the Century, Double Fantasy, Ace of Spades, Freedom of Choice, Scary Monsters, Love Stinks, Remain in Light, Heaven and Hell, Hi-Infidelity, Empty Glass, I Just Can’t Stop It, Just One Night, Absolutely Madness, Blizzard of Ozz, The Blues Brothers soundtrack, Decline of Western Civilization soundtrack, The Jazz Singer soundtrack, The Rose soundtrack, Fame soundtrack, 9 to 5 soundtrack, Urban Cowboy soundtrack, Xanadu soundtrack, Flash Gordon soundtrack, Making Movies, Kings of the Wild Frontier, Memories, One for the Road, Crimes of Passion, Departure, Flesh + Blood, The Game, Head Games, Paradise Theatre, Paris, Permanent Waves, The Romantics, Iron Maiden, INXS, Mekons, Suicide, Pretenders, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Psychedelic Furs, Tangerine Dream, On Through the Night, Panorama, Seventeen Seconds, Uprising, Wild Planet, and Paranoid Time which was the first recording of The Minutemen.

I’d say the best decade was the ’80s as well, because that’s when all my most recent girlfriends were born.

Dan: is there any chance that you’ll still go to the concert I recommended in October, even though you didn’t take to that Cd I sent (yet)??

nope. i like rock music. i like devil music. i like music that breaks down boundaries, reaches into my soul, shows me my heart and shoves it back in the bones built in me. if im gonna give any scandinavian music my precious time its going to be swedish metal, not dreamy music to float to sleep by.

tina: what do you do (other than blog) when you just can’t get to sleep???

im a million years old. i can fall asleep in 3 minutes under any circumstance. i can fall asleep during a russian invasion, i can fall asleep while a visitor is watching porn, i can fall asleep as a girl in nothing but cowboy boots cries because she thought she was pregnant and thought it was mine but i wouldnt return her calls. rarely do i blog while falling asleep. but if i really had to fall asleep and for some reason i dont, i read joyce carol oates.

keir: What’s your initial verdict on Manny as a Dodger? If you’ve already said so, sorry that I missed it.

i have written about manny before, but its ok if you missed it, i realize this blog isnt very user friendly. i love him. he’s the only reason i would go to dodger stadium if they werent playing the cubs. hes the reason why dodger fans will actually use their season tickets. and he is the reason why the dodgers will actually have some butts in the seats before the fourth inning.

Sharp (aka Azreal Darkskies): What’s your favourite mixed drink? Have you ever drank whiskey from a tea cup?

it depends on the time of day. in the morning a screwdriver, at brunch mimosa, at lunch rum n coke, at linner jack n coke, at dinner a long island ice tea, in vegas an amaretto sour, and after hours a neat baileys. we dont have tea cups in hollywood. we have the lips of near virgins.

Phaedra: when you are chillin’ in your pad, do you wear shoes, flip-flops, socks, or the good old bare foot?

i had very bad athletes foot when i was a lad, so my feet are quite sensitive. currently im barefoot because im typing you from my living room which has a relatively new oriental rug. when i walk around my house i use adidas plastic sandals. if i am going to be in sandals for more than a few minutes i put socks on first. looks dorky but my feet will sweat in sandals for some reason. if my house was wall to wall carpet i would be barefoot all the time. however in the sack i like to wear socks, which freaks out the ladies at first, but they get used to it.

The Holywriter: Who do you think Obama should pics as a VP?

al gore. hands down. the environment is the biggest emergency the planet should concern itself with, in my opinion. so i would like to see the former vice president return to his old job and complete the unfinished business. also, if you think about it, if the right had their own al gore, you know he’d be mccains running mate. i dont know why the left would avoid such a simple solution. however the left havent made many smart decisions in the last decade so i dont expect them to make a smart one in this matter either.

jessica: what is ashley’s husband’s reaction to your occasional posts involving her? is he wishing you’d just forget it already? have you met him? etc. etc.

ive never met him but ashley is a pretty easy to read person, plus she and i have remained friends. i know that if he was uncomfortable with what i write here or how i portray her, she would have told me by now. shes many things but shes not shy and she freely gives me her unasked for opinions all the time.

furthermore, like many young women, ashley loves attention. and also, she was an important part of this blog. i would think that it would be more controversial if i suddenly stopped writing about her or using her pics. i havent stopped writing about any of my former girlfriends. and i certainly havent stopped writing about any of my friends. i dont know why things would or should be any different with the daisy princess.

plus if i hadnt broken up with ashley when i did, she probably wouldnta been introduced to her old man and they wouldnt be married now. so if anything bro should love me.

hi busblog. i heart you. but ive been cheating on you. over at the oly bloggy

whats great about you is you never complain when i cheat.

when i wrote on the buzznet blog and even called it the buzzblog you didnt say nothin

when i wrote something like 1,500 posts on LAist you were all, pffft, cuz ive written nearly 5,500 on you.

jealousys for girls anyways.

so wanna see what ive been doing today other than giving blood and watching the olympics and watching the cubs lose?

k.

– Did the ‘Today’ show host catch Kobe not honoring America?

– Protesters rappel down Chinese TV station’s wall, hang banner

ive posted more but now i gotta go back to editing.

tomorrow your answers to Ask Tony – i swear!

isnt my favorite thing beautiful?

no not ashley, and how dare you call her a thing. sheesh.

im talking about my old directv dish. the one i had on my front porch for so long. the one i traded in for an hd directv dish that they installed on the side of my home. the one that right now is bringing me 1080i images “live” from the beijing olympics in china.

that thing.

the thing i love almost as much as i loved ashley.

the thing i love almost as equal as i loved my true love.

the thing that i love almost as much as i love my beloved chicago cubs, who, by the way are on such a freaking tear right now its scary.

i got that dish back in like 97. my man mike hickey installed it on our apartment on haight street and soon after he and i went into business installing those dishes. for big bucks. well it was big bucks for us.

but mostly it was freedom.

me and mike drove all around the bay area installing dishes and freedom to people in big houses, little houses, mobile homes, and trailers.

later it was me and solomon doing the installs.

so fun. so crazy sometimes. and at $50 an hour cash, so worthwhile.

eventually i quit cuz i wanted to catch the dot com wave, but i always have had a warm spot in my heart for directv, it has always been a center part of my home, mostly because it delivers digital picture and sound of things cable cant give me: cubs baseball, bears football, and now tons of hd programming.

today a former chief of favorite thing has just been named publisher of my favorite job. thats right, the LA Times has a publisher.

his name is Eddy Hartenstein and you can read all about him on a certain news site.

its friday its ask tony

and im sorry im just getting this up right now

time flies so quickly. its already time for people on the east coast to go home. its already time for people in TO to wash their cars before their hot dates. and its almost time for my peeps in Chicago to vacuum out their back seats before heading to the drive in.

i was just being interviewed by this lovely woman with a video camera and a tripod and some hot lights. she asked me about, what else, blogs. whats real on the busblog, whats fake. why do i do it? how did i get popular, why do girls chase me, why do companies hire me? it went on for an hour and a half. questions. answers. i was sweating even though it was at my house.

the whole time i kept thinking, yeah this is fine but can i get back to blogging now? yeah this is great but can i do Ask Tony now? sex drugs rock talk is great but can i go back to editing the unbelievably great Olympic blog now?

as i talked my phone would vibrate with each new work email and one of them was, hey Carolyn’s piece about her broken iPhone made it to the front page of Digg. as i talked my burger king chicken sandwich got colder. as i talked she read her questions from a piece of paper and i spoke to the faceless audience and i realized that im the luckiest man in the world because i have a real audience, you, and you are precious.

so thank you, you. no one would be talking to me, no one would be paying me, no one would be missing you, if it werent for you, the busblog audience of real live people who are the foundation of everything. i heart you all. i invite you to ask me the good questions and i will answer them.

LA Times exclusive

: Donald Trump will bail out Ed McMahon

Mega-developer and TV personality Donald Trump has agreed to buy Ed McMahon’s Beverly Hills house for an undisclosed amount and allow McMahon to continue living in it. Details of the deal are still being ironed out, but Trump’s interest is regarded as an act of benevolence.

“I don’t know the man, but I grew up watching him on TV,” Trump said in an exclusive interview with The Times.

McMahon, 85, was facing foreclosure within two weeks on his Beverly Hills home of 18 years. The aging television icon, who was Johnny Carson’s sidekick for three decades, defaulted on $4.8 million in mortgage loans with Countrywide Financial Corp. He said in interviews that he was unable to work because of a neck injury that occurred about 18 months ago.

read the whole story here yo

went to this super cool art show

slash pop up store slash movie hype event on 6th street downtown last night with my homegirls from metromix.

people talk trash about downtown LA and how dirty it is and how it smells like fresh pee and how the vermin roam and how the homeless harrass and how the heroin isnt as good as it used to be and how the loft spaces are too much even for the hipsters and how its not new york no matter what we try to do.

and most of that might be true but i gotta say this about it, at least its a taste of new york in our weird little petri dish of paradise, and new york cant say that they have a piece of LA in manhattan.

i gotta say it IS nice to walk 7 blocks and pass a lot of interesting things and be around tall buildings and smell interesting foods and see a mixed variety of cultures. it IS nice not to have to worry about where you parked. and it IS nice to see kick ass art, hear hip hop, eat free tacos, and see some bad ass mamacitas in tattoos and bleach blonde hair pose next to stand ups from the new pacino / deniro movie and be able to do it in a space thats bigger than a bread box.

new york has many things but it doesnt have lots of elbow room. it doesnt have the greatest weather of all times. and it doesnt have palm trees in the middle of nowhere.

plus it doesnt have me.

it was a free bar it was free convo it was free meeting with new people including this black girl from CAA who looked just like the singer of The Go! Team and i wanted to teller that but i didnt. i dont know why. do people like being thought about as looking like someone? ashley loved it. i didnt.

cougar texted me right as i was leaving the deal. “wanna snack”? she asked. we have this deal that she brought up, actually. she said she didnt wanna have any sex until we both got tested. i told her repeatedly that she was the only one i was getting with but for some reason she thinks that some of whats in here is true so i was all cool with me.

so when i replied letting her know that i had munched on free carne asada she just called me. some people hate texting. especially the older gen.

“are you avoiding me?”

nope.

“why cant we just hang out then?”

cuz you know we wont just hang.

“sigh.”

this was your master plan, baby.

“loud sigh.”

tell you what, text me tomorrow after you made an appointment with your doc.

“tell YOU what, tony, why dont you CALL me after you made an appointment with YOUR doc?”

which tells me alls not perfect in my little petri dish of paradise neither. which is just business as usual in the land of dreams.

im very sorry that the answers to Ask Tony took so long to get together

but ive been bustin my ass on the Olympics blog, which you can see by clicking my header at the top of the busblog any time during the games

and now the answers, interspersed with photos that i didn’t use in the two Kris Krug photo essays that we have posted on the Times

Dan: Did you listen to the CD I sent? And if so, did you like it?

i did. i didnt. i like devil music. there wasnt enough devil in that stuff.

leah: what do you think i should do to improve my bloggy blog? p.s. hi!

baby you have one of the finest blogs of all time. you dont have to change one thing. your writing is great and cute. your pics are beautiful and only getting better. you write almost every day. i love your movie reviews. i love your battles with coke. i love your passion for wedding photography. if you put a gun to my head – something you did often when i visited austin – and made me think of three things that you could do to make your blog more pleasing to ME i would say: (1) more stories about my favorite band in texas (next to Honky) (2)move your ad over to the left column underneath your important stuff (3)more vids – no one knows about your fascinating accent.

The Holywriter: I’m restarting the blog for the millionith time, will you link me?

only if you pray for the Cubs to win it all.

Phaedra: I think I recall you mentioning taking a year off from da herb. What enticed your decision to do so? Do you miss it?

im a very fortunate man. people offer me lots of things: booze, cds, concert tickets, dates, books, you name it. one day someone passed me something to smoke and i was all hmmmm. i thought, i dont know this person. there could be anything in there. plus bros saliva was all over it. so i passed and decided not to smoke anything at all for a year regardless of how it’s presented. i do miss the communal aspect of it, but not enough to break my lil fast. in fact i might extend it to two or three years, who knows?

Gage: plane, train or automobile? Who do you think is the most overrated writer right now? Most underrated?

9/11 has sorta ruined plane travel. its such a hassle. and even though i drove around the country and parts of canada, im not super crazy about driving cars. so trains. i had great success with them in europe on many trips, and i took the subway to work here in LA for nearly 5 years. the most overrated writer right now is chris martin. the most underrated writer is our soon-to-be departing summer intern mark milian who scored this interview last week with the German inventor of the I Am Rich ap for the iPhone which got us hella visitors.

xtx: Did you hear Artie was in an outpatient rehab?

yes i did. i have met people who have a fear of success. it’s interesting to watch him struggle with it. seems to me he just needs Daner back. most suffering is due to lack of true love. artie is one of those rare birds who is on top of the world right now. it would be nice if he could actually allow himself to enjoy it.

Chris Carnaghi: Joe Lieberman or Country Joe and the fish for VP?

Ron Paul.

JackassJimmy: Do you listen to podcasts and if so, which ones do you recommend?

unfortunately i do not listen to podcasts and i will tell you why. i have the Sirius Stiletto and i have an iPhone. together those two products give me every audio option that i need in my socalled life. the sirius gives me days and days of howard stern shows, and the iphone gives me 8 gigs of music, which is way more than i need. i have love for podcasts, in theory, but if you notice, we dont do them at the Times, and i might be one reason why we dont – cuz i dont really believe in them.

Mike: Who’s better AVGN or Nostalgia Critic?

Guitar Heroine – and not just cuz shes smokin

Krista: Any good books I should be reading right now?

Lynda Barry: What it is, Scott McClellan: What Happened, Matt Welch: Myth of a Maverick (now in paperback), What We Do is Secret: Kief Hillsbery

bloopy: once again there’s a slight chance i may have to go down to LA for work in a couple of weeks, but as always i don’t know anything about the place. . . what are your three favorite places to eat down there?. . . and i’m talking anywhere from a greasy little hole in the wall to some posh joint that might turn me away ‘cuz currently i’m sporting a slightly homeless look. . .

hole in the walls are where its at bro: Jean P’s Soul Food Express home of 99 cent soul food. near usc.

Tacos “Arizas”. my favorite taco truck. it’s in Echo Park really close to The Echo but just off Sunset. i get the al pastor tacos even though i hate onions. somehow they magically disappear into the meat. i eat them right there on the card table.

Kanpai: in between a Quiznos and a Chicago Ribs joint on Lincoln near LAX is the best sushi in LA. costly, but deeeelish.

Times bloggers: Can we write about Edwards now?

who?

Alys: Would you rather be able to whip up a delicious dessert anytime/anywhere or always get good seats for you and your travelling companions?

i hate cooking. i hate whipping. and im not crazy about desserts. i would like some Bob Dylan seats at the Santa Monica Civic for next month’s show and im thinking about forking over $250. but the babe i wanna take might not be in town. and for that matter, i might not be either.

Ciavarro: Do you have any bastard children?

youd think at my age id have like a bakers dozen by now. but im such a freak about stds that i wear 7-8 condoms. so technically im still probably pure. but no, still a truly single man. never even had a “scare”.

Rob Lawrence: where’s the Flickr page for Zaca Lake? how many penises do you have? how long?

i have a folder here. if you cant see it, join flickr, add me as a contact, and send me a flickr mail saying you wanna be added as a “friend”. strangely i only have one and ive had it for a very long time.

raymi: because you are probably the most fashionable dresser i know, what is your fashion predictions for the next two years-ish, for women and men.

my fashion prediction for women in the next two years is that they will be doing what you were doing three years ago. except without as much style.

as for men. men will stop wearing pink. thank god.

Tonio K.: If your knees bent the other way – what would chairs looks like?

our current economy.

Rob Lawrence: what happens when you xerox a mirror?

and angel loses its mind.

timmay!!!!!: tits or ass?

glad you asked. unfortunately i dont think its that good of a record, really. i know hes a classic, i know hes a sorta genius. in fact a long time ago i had a chance to see the who at the la collesium, bb king with stevie ray vaughn at the greek, or him at the universal amphitheater. and i saw him with karen broome and we had a great time. and ive never regretted it. until i got the new record. now i wish i had seen stevie.

Sharp: Nas or Jay-Z? (Kanye is not an option)

at first i didnt get Jay-Z. it wasnt thuggish enough for me. i still dont get Biggie even though thats like Karisas jam. and even though on paper i should totally be down with Nas, he just seemed whiney to me. shouldnt there be joy in Some of your music? PE, NWA, even DMX as pissed off as he is has some fun with his tunes but Nas just depresses me and makes me wanna turn back on the metal channel on satellite. im pretty sure Beyonce is gonna ruin his flow but until then, JayZ.

David: Even though he made St Louis his bitch today, are you a little uncomfortable seeing Edmonds in a Cubbies uniform? Besides The Ting Tings, what other groups are you currently into? & if you make it to Vegas this weekend come have a few at the Double Down?

Edmonds was a California Angel, then he came to the Cubs. whats to feel uncomfortable about? best pickup we made in a very long time. every team needs a guy who hustles. you might not see it in the box score, and hes not the best Fantasy guy, but when you need a diving catch or a clutch home run or two, theres your guy.

i really wanna buy the new Grates record, but its only available on Australian iTunes, so i might just mail order it like in olden times. new musicwise i like Wallpaper, Ancestors, Lil Wayne, and Goldfrap. old school ive been listening to the reissue of exile in guyville, and im still rocking Dinosaur Jr.’s Beyond.

keir: 1) “Post Office” or “Factotum?” 2) Sandberg or Dawson? 3) Anaconda or IVBC?

not sure how to pick between the first two. or the second two. all classics. all worthy. we are so not worthy. but the last two choices are easy, at the Anaconda i saw Body Count, the Ramones, Bo Diddley, and a little band called Bad Neighbor who completely ruled. i also saw a lot of shows upstairs that i dont even really remember. the only thing i ever did at IVBC was play pool and drink beer in the daytime. a girl wanted me to kiss her there once and i said this isnt really even IV in here, lets go outside and keep it real. im glad they burned it down.

Ali: when do you plan on returning to canada….and what, if anything do you do on a daily basis, to change the world ?? 😛

id really like to go back to TO for new years eve but only if i have a date lined up as good if not better than the one you and i had last new years. although i seriously doubt anything could top the drinking, the duaneing, the karaoking, and the all nighting through the snow.

Scott: When you gonna come out to Japan?

i hear you have to be a gazillionaire to even daydream about japan. im just a workin man.
