hey its friday. and its halloween

which means its axe tony! mwhahahahaha

every friday i promise that i will have the questions answered by the night time. so i wont promise that today cuz when i promise it it never happens.

so lets just say your questions will be answered and everyone will be happy.

the pic on the right was when i dressed up as jack white of the white stripes. my date was the lovely moxie von foxy who i was married to for a little while and who i was on the radio with about a year ago and who is the hottest republican in the US americas.

this halloween i think i have the perfect costume but i dont wanna say what it is cuz i dont want a gazillion people running out and being it cuz i will probably be the lamest version of it.

and no, i wont be a hanging chad, although if i was going to the west hollywood carnival id be that for sure.

so leave your questions and when you do also note what your favorite halloween costume was.

k…. go!

ps. i know that i usually talk about how much i Love LA – and especially Hollywood. one thing i definately do not like about my hood is that parents (wisely) dont let their kids trick-or-treat anywhere near my area. one of the best parts of my childhood was knocking on every door in our entire community. sure sometimes people wouldnt answer the door, or they woudlnt have candy or theyd have crappy candy. but it was a great experience.

here in hollywood youd be crazy to let your kid knock on a strangers door. they might just end up in a movie or soemthing terrible.

today will be a bittersweet day at the Times

the good news is its friday, and its halloween, and blogosphere-wise we will celebrate another record-breaking month in a row.

but the bad news is it will be the last day for one of my favorite bloggers, Peter Viles.

in the short period of time that ive been on this job i have seen bloggers come and go. if they have left, they had either accepted the buyout from the company or they were laid off because of this horrible economy and because of whats happening publishing-wide. the most recent victim of the layoffs on our blogs was veronique de turenne of la now. her farewell post earlier this week was heartbreaking, particularly since she was one of the very few journalists that we had whose sole responsibility was to blog.

as sad as i was about veronique, it hurts just as much, if not more, to lose peter viles of la land, our real estate blog. it hurts a little more because peter used to come into my office every day and talk about his family, life, baseball, journalism, and ways to make his blog more successful. every day we’d talk, and some days like today we would eat lunch. like andy malcolm of top of the ticket, peter was downright obsessed about embracing this new form of writing which he viewed correctly as an extension of his already-seasoned journalism.

pete would talk with me, ben welsh, erik ulken, andy, anyone who had a tip on how to do it better. we had online chats, he appeared on radio and tv, he even had tree of the week on saturdays. anything to better reach out to his audience to tell the fascinating story of the housing crash here in southern california.

little do they know it, but all of these bloggers have taught me secrets on how to be a better blogger. peter taught me how to love your readers. long time riders of the busblog, or peeps from my LAist days may remember how snippy i could become to negative commentors, especially the anonymous types. peter embraced them. not only that but he’d listen to them. hes the most non-defensive blogger ive ever met. web 2.0 champions pretend that blogging is a two-way conversation but pete epitomizes it. its fascinating, and its one reason (among many) why he single-handedly brought his blog into the exclusive 1-million page view club – several times.

peter is leaving us for a bigger fancier gig not too far from the times building so i look forward to having lunch with him in the near future where he can keep me up to date with tales of his beautiful family and life outside of journalism, a career hes had for 20 years.

veronique, who was hired right around the time i was, helped lead LA Now regularly in the top ten of our 40+ blogs. pete’s la land blog was #3 every month this summer and consistently in the top five. very good, sweet people, and excellent bloggers who will be missed.

live foo-tage

enjoy my shaky camera work and pretend that you are in the front row balcony with ali and i sipping jameson and trying to have a good time.

actually i think this is the clip where you can hear ali say “i can die now” and i reply “i’ll bury you in a good place.”

also, mike in the comments on the previous foo fighters post is correct, the midnight special and don kirshners rock concert were both late night rock shows on tv during the 70s and early 80s but they werent the same show. they were different ones. but they sure seemed the same to me.

also, heres my official review of the foo show in the new LAT music blog, Pop & Hiss

so busy

but i have a few minutes for the busblog

last night karisa, her bf, ali and i went to see the foo fighters at the avalon which used to be the palace.

if youre as old as me you might remember a tv show called Don Kirshners Rock Concert. it was also called The Midnight Special.

AC/DC, James Brown, and many many other artists played at this club on Vine right across from the famous Capital Records building near Hollywood Blvd.

So any time I go there I get excited cuz its a classic place filled with history and good personal memories for me cuz ive seen so many shows there and E! even had its Christmas party there many moons ago before the remodeling.

ali and i ate sushi down the street before the gig. walked up vine, went to the show. first they asked us if we wanted to take pics of the celebs on the red carpet but there didnt seem to be any at that time so we just got into the place.

turned out the media was in the balcony area with the vips which meant free food and drinks. they were also demoing the new blackberry thats gonna be a iphone challenger. but for some reason we didnt see it. whoops. we were there to experience the rock anyways.

queens of the stone age were ok. ali was all “i want to punch you for not being into this.” i probably deserved the punch cuz i was yawning the whole set.

foos were good, but not great and it made me feel like maybe i shoulda had more drinks cuz for some reason i wasnt feeling it. maybe im getting old.

after karisa led us to this fancy sushi place where macy gray was chowing down. we ate fancy sushi and drank and laughed a lot. ali was a good girl and didnt drink there and drove me home so for that reason alone shes my hero.

five minutes with tony

sara and ali from metromix are on their way down to dine with me, so as they walk down i will say hi to you. hi! life is crazy here at the paper. the sorta crazy thats good and the sorta crazy thats not very good. but time goes very fast which is why if this blog can do anything it can show you that you can indeed blog even if your life job worldview is nuts.

in a few minutes the video journalist who went with me to the playboy mansion will upload the video we shot so you can see part of the haunted house, which is probably the coolest haunted house in LA. what you wont see in the video is that the house was also rented out to benefit charity, which is sweet.

indeed our working relationship with the playboy organization is pretty fascinating. and i wish i could tell you some of the stories that geoff boucher is working on but they are stories about things youd never know about in regards to hef. which for a guy who has been in the public eye since the 50s is pretty remarkable that anything is still under the covers so to speak, but just wait, you might be impressed.

in other news im out of hand sanitizer, the lakers will probably go undefeated, greg oden is a bust, the cubs are gonna go all the way next year, sarah is late for lunch, i failed on chapter two of October Surprise, my buckets got a hole in it, looks like i will see the foo fighters tonight, we will have a new president in a week, and the welches will be in LA next month.

other than that im still eating drive through keeping it real. caio!

one of the problems with young girls is you wake up so tired

sorry pc police, young women. at first you think why am i so tired and then youre like oh yeah HER. and shes snoozing away oblivious to everything and you wonder is she passed out cuz shes oh so satisfied or just bored. some things you probably shouldnt concern yourself with cuz deep down whos really satisfied about anything while awake.

when our #1 blog was about to hit 2 million in a month i was already thinking how can we make it go to 3 million, when that happened, how about 3.5 million. tomorrow it will probably go over 4 million and by pure math shouldnt i be twice as happy as when it went over 2? instead im thinking ok how can i get another one of our deals to hit 4. how can i get some hit 1. more more more. thats what she said. except i dont look as cute saying it as when she does in fact sometimes she looks not cute saying it and i wonder do i look not cute saying it too?

i havent been cute in a long time. but i sure am demanding a lot. whats the point of cute? whats the point of more? isnt the point to be satisfied. dont the italians and the french understand 42 the meaning of life? and isnt it all about being satisfied? good friends good family good wines good times. great sunsets, great art, great music, great love making, long naps, long meals, slow dancing, good jokes? great books, funny looks, long lasting materials, reliable relationships?

walked to pick up my bike yesterday and its nearly november but the weather was perfect. people were sitting outside eating ice cream in the nighttime. people were sitting on benches eating tacos. kids were skateboarding over dumpsters. people were waiting for the busses. and i thought this is what its all about.

got my bike and its been so long since id been on it that i felt too big for it. am i still growing or has it shrunk? i used to ride that thing thru westwood during the dot com implosion and now im riding it through the great new depression and i didnt wanna stop riding it last night. i even bought it a new light. why? cuz even perfection needs improvement i guess.
