Gage: Follow your head or follow your heart?

ive followed my heart before. turns out my heart is a crackhead with no concept whatsoever as to whats right and whats wrong and what would work in reality and what would be good for me in the longterm. sometimes i think that following ones heart is tantamount to saying lets drink this gallon of moonshine and see how fast the family station wagon can speed through traffic at night with the lights off.

jon: Do babies have accents?

yes terrible ones. which is why the Lord in His infinite Wisdom hushed them up for their first year because theyre really annoying and detrimental to the youngins’ life expectancy.

sass: If I wanted to make holiday greeting cards to sell, could you suggest yer fave online service to do so?

i know our friend Gage has made some holiday greeting cards this year and she made them through Cafe Press. not only did i like the quality of her cards but i have worked with them on several occasions in the past and they were a great online service. and i made a good deal of money from them. so right on Cafe Press.

adriel: i’m so bored…what are good ways to make new friends when you’re old??

other than the trenchcoat at the library or the $20 bill on the fishing hook? how can you not make friends what with your hot bod, your single status, and this crazy new tool called Facebook? our pal Lindsay has had so much newfound success on Match.com that i think she has given up blogging all together and she lives in the midwest, therefore id think you’d have the same kind of luck.

Sarah: I showed my mom a pic of you and she said, “Tony looks younger every time I see him.” How do you maintain that baby face?

theres an old saying that goes, “youre only as young as your girlfriend feels”. i havent had a girlfriend, technically, in years, so i cant use that as an excuse, so i will first of all thank your kind momma (while suggesting that she get a second opinion on the prescription of her glasses), and then i will admit that i owe it all to my low carb, high fiber diet, plenty of exercise, long periods of meditation, 7 hours of sleep each night, and frequent trips to the Botox Outlet on Robertson.

Andrea: Favorite sandwich of all time?

my truest says that any sandwich made by anyone other than yourself will be delicious. i would add that PB&J on white bread still has no peers, especially if the P is extra crunchy.

Steven Allen Adams: Hey Tony. For the past few months I have allowed my news website take time away from updating my personal blog. I need some good music, but I have no idea if there are truly any good new bands that can energize me. What are your suggestions.

the other day someone asked me what new tunes they should be into and i said Funn, Those Darlins, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. I may have even provided video evidence of the last two groups. Two days later, world renowned tastemaker, and all around good guy Scott Perry praised them to high heaven last week in his New Music Tipsheet email sent to all the movers and shakers of Hollywood. (I still dont know how i got on the list.) Heres a short excerpt of his praise:

This week, [the band that is important to the music business and the business business] happens to be EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS, a band who are making waves in underground circles, but whose story has gone largely unheralded by the mainstream.

Yeah, they’ve gotten press by all the right blogs and papers. And they’re starting to get some airplay as they tour the States, including indie stalwarts KCRW, WXPN, and World Cafe. However, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros is not one of those bands that are dominating blogs & press to the point where radio HAS to play them or risk looking like a fool for not playing them. Yet.

But what’s unraveling in real time, in real life, is the band is selling out concerts with little fanfare, propelled largely by word of mouth. In all honesty, I haven’t seen anything like this since the White Stripes were selling out multiple nights in San Francisco, New York, and Detroit while they were still signed to Sympathy for the Record Industry — in other words, those who know, KNOW.

Needless to say i almost always agree with Scott and am tickled that i am with him this early in the game.

g/d: why all these empty artist pockets? could it be picky consumer? pickpockets.

artists’ pockets are always empty. as they should be. what would have Van Gogh been if he were rich? would Michaelangelo have knocked out the Sistine chapel if he could have, instead, summered at Fire Island? doubt it. hunger in the heart and in the money is the fuel of fine art. thus bring on the picky consumers and the pickpocketers.

Courtney: if you needed to fundraise $3700 how would you go about it? ps sarah’s mom is right, you are looking young in the face.

ive raised thousands of dollars on this very blog. without the help of Twitter and Facebook. if i were to do it again i would use the blog, and those two social media devices. and maybe youtube. i would be creative. i would be transparent. i would integrate PayPal and i would have a countdown. people love thermometers. but they love watching those thermometers fill up with blood even more.

Alyson: On the ladies: glasses or contacts?

im a weirdo, i like glasses. i dont care what kind of glasses. horn rimmed, john lennon type, sexy secretary, see thru vision jobs, all kinds. you know who i think is beautiful? mrs chad cavalaro. aka smelly mrs danielley. sometimes she wears matt good glasses, sometimes she goes au natural. i can see why women wouldnt wear glasses on their wedding day, but i think they are an accessory that often gets a bad rap.

monkey: can actors be trusted?

the only people who can really be trusted is your momma, your lawyer, and the man they call the blogfather.

sam z: in a month

you celebrate two years of employ at the los angeles times. what would you say is weirdest, coolest, thing youve been involved in?

saw john fogerty last night at the kodak with my man kemp

the power of Amazon’s mp3 specials is that one day i saw that they were giving away Fogerty’s new country record with the Blue Ridge Rangers for $3 or $2 or something ridic like that so i went for it.

when a guy writes as many classic tunes as Fogerty has (“who’ll stop the rain”, “proud mary”, “lookin out my backdoor”, “hey tonight”, “rockin all over the world”, “travelin band”, “suzie q”, etc) you should pay them $3 every time they come out with a new cd.

anyways i love the new music and when it came time to see him in concert it was a no brainer for me because id never caught his show.

however once when i was driving around america a few years ago i found myself in a lonesome motel whose carpets were so dirty i laid out towels on the floor so i could walk from the bed to the bathroom without the fear of athletes foot from hell, or worse, scurvy.

i had gotten a few beers from the nearby liquor store and turned on the tv and there was Fogerty doing an Austin City Limits episode and it was just one hit after the other and the thing that stunned me was ol boy was doing each and every solo.

they werent mind altering shreds but they were good enough.

which made me wonder last night why he’d feel the need to have so many backup guitarists.

i say it was for this photo.

yesterday the hollow trees played the Chandler Auditorium

here at the Times

it was my first time ever seeing them even though theyve been around for five years.

thats what sort of friend i am.

yesterdays broadcast / live stream was really a dress rehearsal slash test to see if we could bring a band to the building, film them with three cameras, get the audio mix right, be able to switch between the cameras in a semi professional way, get the lighting right, get the load in and load out right, and stream it through our music blog.

working with a band as easy going and professionally prepared as the Hollow Trees made it a lot easier than working with strangers, so my hats off to Gregory Hollow Tree and the band because it could have been an afternoon of drama but instead it was a walk in the park.

everything worked out well except for yrs truly who had a brain fart while holding the mic for the interview section (something i didnt do very well) but, you know, it was practice!

not sure who the next band is, but the original idea is to have a gameplan so that if bands want to pop into the Times, they can get interviewed and play for us for about an hour and we can stream it through the music blog. the goal is to have these lil concerts at lunch time so that people who eat in front of their computers at work can have something cool to watch / listen to, for the low low price of free.

loving my job is nothing new, but yesterday was a complete joy because this was all pulled off beautifully. much thanks to the Trees and Michael McGehee who organized all the small details.

dear tony, did you know beyonces little sister

wrote a song about you?

i have to take my car to a new repair shop tomorrow.

they should reform auto care.

computer care too, while theyre at it.

once upon a time i wanted to open a donut store. tonys donuts.

best part about tonys donuts, other than the arcade in the roof, was the repair shop.

because in the repair shop, not only did they fix your car, but for any repair over $200, we’d fix something on your computer for free.

need to install that new OS? wanna get a bigger hard drive? or speed up your computer with ram or a good wiping of the harddrive? fine, then let us fix something good. or buy a set of tires.

and we’ll give you a dozen free donuts.

as nice as it would be to be beyonces brother in law,

id rather know a reliable, reasonable mechanic.

or know where theres a killer donut store.

for i dont think either of them are ready for this jelly.

maid came early today

is gonna be oktotally disrupted my morning routine. thus are the modern tragedies of my-so-called-life.

there used to be a time when i would have to be at work super early so i never saw my maid. but life is better now and i can get into the office at a reasonable hour. problem is, my maid, i believe, is used to being places at the buttcrack of dawn.

anyways its terribly embarrassing for me because when i know shes coming i just let everything go to hell. which believe it or not is different than my normal lifestyle, which to outsiders may look quite similar to a man allowing his apartment to go to hell. but its not so.

i was brushing my teeth when i heard a knock on the door. it was the back door, which is never good. either it means a young lady has come to retrieve her jewels, or it means the maintenance man needs to turn off the water to the building, or it means a homeless man wants money, or it means a small time theif is casing the joint.

or it means the lovely maid caught a fast bus because its veterans day and didnt hit any traffic at all and has arrived before the man of the house has had time to “prepare” for the cleaner.

theres a whole system with my laundry, for example. clothes that may appear dirty, and have even made their way to the floor, are quite clean, and could use some folding and placement in a drawer. those clothes need to be put in a basket marked clean so she can fold and place.

meanwhile there are some unmentionables and unsee-ables that need to be hidden or tucked away or stashed, if you will. i dont pretend that she doesnt know ever hiding place and every secret i have, but i dont want to have those things right in her face, forcing her to make a decision.

the good thing about the early arrival was she told me that she would cook for me. often she makes little meals and places them on a plate with saran wrap over them. then she sits the plate in front of the microwave.

i was able to tell her that often i dont come home for days, that i appreciate her cooking, but she should put it in the fridge so i can enjoy it. sometimes when the delicious treat is fish or chicken my nutritionist advises me to throw the home made meal out. which breaks my heart.

yes my life is so difficult that i dont see how i make it through even one day without heavy medication.

i see a lot of hookers out there

when i jog.

you might notice one or two when youre driving, but when youre right there on foot theres way more than youd think.

i think is the economy that bad?

but then i think but what about their customers? isnt the economy bad for everyone?

i almost get hit by cars when i run at night.

its dangerous but it keeps your mind off being exhausted, running for no good reason.

theres this mechanic in my neighborhood. i used to take my car there all the time.

most of the cars theyd work on were amazing lowriders and other classic american sedans and convertibles.

then one day out of the blue they have no cars in the lot, not even the old ancient fire truck. and as time goes on we learn that they went out of business for some reason.

today i saw a for lease sign on the garage door.

this is a place that was around for 20 years and then one day it just closes up without any farewell party or any hoo ha of any sort whatsoever?

all the cars just left the lot, sold or otherwise, including a damn fire truck and there wasnt any notice, plea for help, or murder scene?

just one day vibrant and thriving, next day poof gone.

i am both bewildered, and im impressed.

ive dated girls so loud that every step of the way out of the door something was announced to the world.

omg its so bright out. omg its so hot. hey should we bring waters? etc.

how these people moved out a dozen cars, trucks, and equipment for 12 bays, without a whisper is admirable.

clearly the work of ninjas.
