American Splendor

starring Paul Giamatti, Judah Friedlander, Hope Davis

HBO Films / Fine Line

directed by Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini

the central problem with american splendor is its not very funny. its also disjointed and directionless. it also tries to do weird little tricks for no good reason.

once it works.

american splendor is a story about a bitter cleveland underground comic book writer named harvey pekar who made several interesting appearances on the david letterman show in the 80s.

for some reason the co-directors found it necessary to include the real-life pekar into the film along with the actor, paul giamatti, who is portraying him.

in one scene the real life co-worker of Pekar, Toby Radloff, is seen talking to the real life Pekar as the actors portraying the pair watch in the background.

i take it back, it didnt work, it sorta worked.

we want to root for pekar. he has a good story to tell. it’s interesting.

his relationship with underground comic book star and illustrator of some of pekar’s comics, r. crumb, isnt nearly as interesting as his relationship with his co-worker, radloff

its a nice suprise in the movie.

its not a bad film, its just in no way a 2003 top ten film.

why it was R-rated is beyond me.

Giamatti, who played Pig Vomit in the Howard Stern movie, Private Parts, is more than believeable in this film.

At times he is preferred.

in the Greg Vaine movie rating scale, i give American Splendor a Good-Good

two dancing girls from the academy

Rabbit-Proof-Fence knocked at my door last night at around 6:30pm, typically the time that i arrive home from the xbi.

when they got no answer they became concerned because all the top models and dancers there are madly in love with me and they knew they had a great movie that they wanted me to see, so they cell phoned my ass.

i picked up and told them that i was going to have dinner at my beautiful exgirlfriend’s house in oh so posh santa monica.

they asked for the address and zoomed over in their matching miatas and arrived just as the chinese was being delivered from the always tasty Chung King. tasty but not spicy. chris and i ordered the cha cha chicken which was spicy last time but negative spicy this time.

regardless, the company was always wonderful, the shrimp fried rice no onions, wontons and diet sodas were marvelous.

and the movie, Rabbit Proof Fence, was mesmorizing and wonderful.

quite possibly the best film that ive seen all year.

one thing that i love about these academy screeners is that they dont come with boxes or pamphlets or propaganda or hype or nothing. it’s just a black tape with a white label and the label only tells you the title of the film and how long its going to be.

exactly the way i love to watch movies.

perhaps others get the crap, but after a few years of getting these screeners, the good people know what i like and as quality professionals, they give the customer what they want. and i love that. and i watch the movie and have it where its supposed to be in the morning and i dont give anything away, so they love me.

plus im always happy to share a won ton or two with the ladies who like the hot mustard and/or sweet and sour dipping sauce.

Rabbit Proof Fence was amazing. did i tell you that? i learned about an Australia that i had never known about. a 20th century history lesson that we on this side of the globe are ignorant to.

it’s told subtlely and without much judgement. the actors and actresses are better than you’d expect and the actors who have very few lines are at times better than those with many lines.

and it’s beautiful. and peter gabriel’s music is eno-esque moody and uplifting and helps shape the tone in a grade-a perfect way.

this is not a movie thats going to break any box office records, but it does show you that you can tell a story, a true story and do it in a way that doesnt have to beat you over the head for you to understand.

bravo, director of The Quiet American, bravo!

i couldnt be a fashion designer

all i would end up with would be plaid skirts, leather pants, cheerleader sweaters, and go go boots.

nobody wants a line like that.

the academy sent over adaptation last night. i didnt have anyone to watch it with which was actually good because i was working on the website for my attorney. i watched it once and didnt really like it but i thought that was maybe because i was working as i was watching it. so then after i was done working i watched it again and still i didnt like it.

a movie about writing a movie is sorta lame. sorry. and did anything really happen? was anything resolved? i get it that thats what the screenwriter was talking about but, wtf, spike?

there were about two spike jonez moments in the whole film if you dont count the excellent trick photography during the scenes where nick cage plays his twin brother, but so what?

am i to believe that women would fall for a guy just because he’s a good writer? that it doesnt matter if he’s fat and balding and unattractive and lives with his brother? does charlie kaufman really want me to think that gorgeous women in hollywood really just want a man who’s smart and funny and positive and knows how to tell a good story?

like that would ever happen in a million years.

and then theres meryl streep, am i supposed to believe that she would fall for a toothless hick just because he gets obsessive about things?

who the fuck is writing this movie? this is no movie, it’s a nerd’s wet dream, but it’s not even that, it’s the story of a nerd writing about writing about a nerd’s wet dream. bullshit i say. bull fucking shit.

i want spike jonez to do better, please.

youre the best director out there. dont waste nick cage and meryl streep like that with that bullshit script.

i dont care that all of hollywood is falling all over themselves to get to charlie kaufman. a few years ago everyone was trying to get to arsenio.

plus the characters were all flat.

plus you cant have gurus in good stories. especially gurus who accept an invite to a fucking bar and help the protaganist over a brew and does such a wonderful job guruing that he gets a hug and changes the poor schmuck’s life. fuck that. it’s too easy. and it’s completely unrealistic outside of in bad books and movies.

in the wee hours after i watched the movie for a second time i popped in grand theft auto and ran over a bunch of people in my stolen cop car and went to bed forgetting that i hadnt locked my front door, but remembering that i got my first real life fan letter from a very interesting woman in new mexico who fancies herself a lithographer.

thank you for your letter and cool drawings!

and ashley im still waiting for my key

soundbitten

strippergram showed up at my door

with triple d breasteses, a six pack, and an academy screener of The Good Girl.

the academy has figured out that i fall asleep during these movies if they get sent over too late in the eve, so ive been getting this shit pretty much right after i get home from the office.

im not a big fan of Friends. i probably have only seen three episodes all the way through. maybe four.

fuck friends.

but i am a big fan of the independent film office space which starred the friends chick and the good girl has a similar tone of subtle humor.

i wish i knew some subtle humor.

me and clipper girl were sitting around watching american idol the other night and she said, “you havent thought of a good video game in a while. think of one right now.”

shes a super cute girl and for some reason she always inspires me.

so i said, ok, its called Back From The Dead and what you can be is an assassinated hero like martin luther king jr. or ghandi or jfk or joan of ark or someone and you walk around the city and you get to blow away bad people and your goal is to snuff out enough of them that you get to go head to head against a giant version of whoever it was who assasinated you.

only problem is the cops dont know that youre Back From The Dead, plus you’re leaving a trail of blood behind you from your mortal wound, so youre pretty easy to follow, so its a good idea to ask someone nicely if you can use their car.

most people wont let you so you might have to steal it when they go shopping.

joan of ark is constantly on fire so you have to make sure that she doesnt get too close to trees or children else they will start on fire.

clipper girl yawned. not at all impressed.

sounds like a grand theft auto ripofff she said and inspected her toenail polish.

ah yes, but the real game is Back From the Deal Online where you can team up with some of your favorite martyrs and form a gang and roam the streets like a herd and become one of the strangest troupes around.

problems walking around with abe lincoln with a hole in his hat or jfk with most of his face blown off is that you not only attract crowds but also paparazzi who are constantly telling the press where you are.

so you have to keep moving.

dont stop.

today im getting a haircut.

mc brown’s super bowl party pictures

ashley and i went to see “the ring” on friday night

thisismethe ring is the new scary movie thats supposed to be really scary.

so was it really scary?

ashley kept her eyes closed and her hands over her face for the last 15 minutes and then cried for a half hour after the movie was over.

she didnt let go of my arm until we got back into my house and then she wouldnt leave my side until after we turned on all the lights and got the tv going for a little while.

she said, please dont fall asleep. and then started crying thinking i would fall asleep and leave her alone with thoughts of

the ring

in her mind.

i thought the movie was good. i thought it was made well, and smart, with good acting and a good story.

but i think the movie could have been a bunch better if the last scene would have lasted two more minutes. same image, just longer. i think that would freak people out big time in a movie theatre and maybe everyone would go home crying and scared shitless.

i thought about the movie for a while as we drove home, trying to think about happy little things that i could say to ashley. i thought that it’s pretty hard to make a good scary movie.

you need a good monster. you need it to be ruthless. you need good people for it to terrorize. innocent people are the best. the blonde lady in psycho is a nice innocent person, for example.

and the more laws of nature the monster can break while seeming believable, the better.

jurrasic park is one of my favorite scary movies, because if we can believe that twisted logic about dna in a mosquito, etc. equals dinosaurs who could get in the situation of trying to eat little kids stuck in the rain in an explorer, then we can find ourselves in a super scary situation.

and to have a ghost or a demon chase the innocent ones in a story where said evil ones could possibly be real in modern day times, then you have something that might make you not trust going to bed without the sheets up high.

thats a really good scary movie.

in my opinoin, the ring was mighty close to that. and far better than i expected.

took the girl who blew me off to minority report

and here’s my non-spoiling report.

“Minority Report” is not as good as people are saying that it is.

It is very very good during its good parts, but those parts do not keep this zeppelin soaring throughout the entire adventure, which is a STINKING SHAME because it could have been awesome.

Borrowing a great deal from the Kubrick crime and punishment classic “A Clockwork Orange,” Spielberg has obviously surrounded him with spineless wanks who do not have the courage to say to the fine director that sometimes you have to EDIT the waste. I really liked a lot of this movie, but theres enough fat to trim this 2 hour, 17 minute sci fi thriller into a 90 minute work of art easilly. Super easilly. How easilly? Ever pee before? As easy as that.

But people in Hollywood are soft and dull and solely interested in their immediate financial gains and a Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg/Philip K. Dick summer blockbuster is money in the bank, so why tip over the cash cow.

Because you can make tons more cash, gluttons, giving the people High Quality.

Nobody’s going to see this movie 3-4 times.

And another thing. Why no super hot chicks? There’s a character who’s interesting and floating in water most of the film and she’s bald. Do you know how many super hot babes dying to be known for being hot (even while bald) in such a non-sexual role? Tons.

Maybe when im not so busy will i make a list of actresses who would have been way better than Samantha Morton, who did her job well, but added nothing to what could have been a nice semi-sexual sub-plot to a film that lacks no sexiness. But I’m more than used to that on any post-Risky Business Cruise vehicle.

Tom wasn’t bad. Hardly annoying. Mostly believable. Almost likeable.

Was there music in the film? Can’t remember.

Was there awkward comic relief? Some.

Would I recommend this to you? Reluctantly, yes.

I am sick of encouraging geniuses, which Mr. Spielberg is, to continue down this path of sci-fi mediocrity. If you want to be Kubrick, bro, you’ll have to become a tad more of a perfectionist. Get an editor who doesnt care about your past.

And, jeeze, steve, Kubrick was known for more than his weirdness, his look was so easy to borrow from, the symmetry of the shots, the balance, the colors, the optical illusion of it all. None of that was present here. It never is. People borrow from Kubrick all the time, but they ignore the look, and thats a big fat mistake.

I give Minority Report a solid “B.”

the mailbag is bursting it’s so full, so let’s get to it.

Q. What do you think of Mike Tyson?

A. If some guy with dreadlocks and a British accent was going to beat me at a fight, I would act super crazy too and try to freak him out. Mike is following the game plan perfectly. He’s still my favorite boxer of all time.

Q. I just met this girl, we’ve been having sex a lot, now she says she always feels like she has to pee but she doesnt have to pee.

A. Shes got a UTI – urinary tract infection. If you live near Mexico, go to Mexico and get the generic Ciporol that’s probably being sold for $2 a box now that the Anthrax scare is over. Take two pills a day for 5 days. And tell her to take care of the puddy after banging.

Q. I’ve seen your picture, there’s no way you’re getting all those girls.

A. I don’t understand it either. It’s starting to freak me out.

Q. What new records are you listening to?

A. “Glitter,” no lie. And I taped Yo Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax opening the new opera hall in Philly and I listen to that all the time.

Q. Why do you believe in Jesus?

A. Cuz He writes better than me.

Q. What was the best moment of your life?

A. When I won the award for Best Arts & Entertainment Editor for my college paper.

Q. Why don’t you just change your site to Ashley.com?

A. Don’t tempt me.

Q. Why don’t you write the way you used to?

A. Too much Civ III.

Q. Why don’t you write for a living?

A. No one has offered.

Q. How old are you, really?

A. Old enough to know what matters.

Q. What was the best movie of the year?

A. “Moulin Rouge” “Lord of the Rings” and “Amelie” and “Hedwig” and “Momento”.

Q. Why do you like Mariah so much?

A. Cuz she pays attention to me.

Q. Why do you like Bill Clinton, he thought with this dick.

A. True, but his dick was usually right.

Q. Are the Clippers for real?

A. No, but Clipper Girl is.

christina ricci lost some weight,

christina riccibleached her hair and put on a grass skirt and thinks that i’ll like her more, but it’s impossible. i liked her fat, skinny, middle, whatever.

There’s something troubled in her eyes and I’m not someone who tries to fix people, i just want to have a good time.

Anna writes and writes from Australia she says “hey! why dont you ever post my doubles scores. Martina and I won again yesterday and I bet you wont report that.”

And it’s true, women’s doubles tennis is like female mud wrestling. Who cares about the score?

This blog, this year, is dedicated to Anna’s quest to win a singles tourney. Her success in doubles interests me as much as her success on the dancefloor. I suppose it would matter to me if I was there, but I wasnt, so…

Checked out Lord of the Rings the other night at my favorite movie theatre but they sorta screwed me because they dont take credit cards. Cash only.

The theatre has leg room for days as if they took out every other row of seats. They have giant busts of Greecian women that glow as the film plays and Ashley calls it creepy but I think it’s cool. But when movies cost $18 for two tickets you really oughtta get with the program. Plus, if people want to rob some place, the best place to rob is an establishment that collects thousands of dollars in cash in a very short period of time and has kids making minimum wage and no security officers.

So I said, “it’s cool we’ll walk over to the grocery store and get some cash…”

And Ashley said, “There will be no we. YOU will RUN to the ATM and RUN back here.”

Ever told a rabid dog to sit right before it tries to bite you? Sometimes it works.

And sometimes after it realizes it has sat it gets up and bites you in the ass.

Eye on the ball, Anna.
