when you are seeing double triple, aim for the middle ball

i have an admission to make. i doubt it will turn off any of you, but if this was Chicago i might be run out of town.

i was never in love with Ron Santo until he had his second leg cut off.

i grew up at a time when there were very few black people on tv. and as the only black boy in school i would get very happy when id see a black dude in a place of prominence. and for me growing up in the burbs of illinois there was no more prominent place than on WGN in a Cub uniform.

therefore of all the Cubbie heroes of the 70s there were only three who mattered to me, the black ones: Ernie Banks, Billie Williams, and Fergie Jenkins.

because im slow, for the longest time i thought Jose Cardenal was black because of his immensely impressive afro, but once someone put a mic in front of him it because painfully obvious that he was of hispanic descent.

ron santo was a really great cub player. but he was almost invisible to me and by that i mean he wasnt as suave as williams, wasnt Mr Cub like banks, wasnt the ace like fergie, and didnt have a fro to aspire to rock like cardenal. so even though he batted cleanup i barely noticed him unless it was the All Star Game.

younger cub fans discovered santo through his radio broadcasts but because i was older, there were only two cub announcers that i paid any attention to: jack brickhouse and harry caray. and once youve embraced harry it was like staring into the sun: no one else mattered.

to this day i have not one but two pictures of harry on my desk at work.

fortunately for those cub fans who actually stayed in chicagoland there was a resurgence in Santo awareness when it became obvious that he was really suffering from the effects of diabetes.

sure he was a good radio guy, but the real story was he was a Cub who was almost good enough to be a Hall of Famer; but because he had gone through heart attacks, bladder surgery, heart surgery, one leg amputated in 2001 and another leg amputated in 2002 he became a more lovable character who was easy to root for as the evil Hall of Fame committee continued to deny him access to the highest glory in baseball.

last night at 70 years old, Santo ascended to somewhere better than the hall of fame

an even friendlier confine

and i hope that when Ron Santo made it to the pearly gates, St. Peter made him sweat it out for a second or two pretending he didn’t see him on the list, and then said, oh wait whats this, and lifted his sleeve to reveal his only tattoo

so much went wrong this week

but it could have been far worse

woe is me

its keira-annes birthday!

shes 24!

omg keira anne and i go way back. we first met in the xbi when she was trying to poison me with some truth serum

and i played along for a while

and then turned the tables.

now neither of us are at the agency so we can talk more openly and honestly together.

turned out the xbi prevented her from dating for as long as she was working there. something id never heard of before, but it makes sense.

never know when youre going to be kidnapped or killed.

the last thing theyd want is for you to blink if the bad guys flashed a picture of someone you loved on the screen.

but now that she has a regular job she has a bf. who she seems pretty into, so of course i am very happy for her.

and hes a lucky dude because i can only imagine all that pent up lovin thats inside our sweet girl from BC.

sadly you wont be reading any of those personal details in her blog, but you will learn alot about vancouver and british columbia. so make sure to go to keira-anne.com

and if you wanna revisit the past check out our old interviews.

this, the 7,5000th post on the busblog,

is dedicated to the truest

who is flying away to afrique in just a few hours to save the world.

i want to thank everyone who donated funds to the orphanage that she will be working at for the next six weeks. that was very kind of you. and for those who havent donated yet, its not too late, just click here and knock yrself out.

last night she and i went to dinner and she was worn out from running around. she was a little weary from the malaria shot. and she was on edge from not eating all day.

so i got her a little sake, a little beer, and some of the freshest fish you could imagine.

and i held her hand. and i looked into her eyes.

and i told her some of the dirtiest jokes youve ever heard.

twas super romantic.

she even misted up a tad.

i will miss her so. she shows me what people are supposed to be like. kind, sweet, open, caring, selfless, studious, spiritual, fun…

america may be losing a daughter, but africa will be gaining an angel.

tell your friend Veronica

do you know how many Jewish friends i have?

so many.

i have so many its funny. my first super close jewish friend was Alan Grand.

all the kids at school teased him, they called him Jew Lock for some reason. dumb nickname.

i just called him Alan.

we hung out a lot throwing a rubber ball at stairs. we made up a whole game around it. before electricity thats what you had to do for fun.

three doors down from him was another Jewish kid our age named Nelson.

the two families couldnt have been more different, so when kids at school were all, omg Jews are this or Jews are that id say do you know Alan? theyd say yeah, id say do you know Nelson, theyd say yeah. id say what do they have in common?

and they couldnt come up with anything.

and i said they live on the same block. and they get ridiculed by imbeciles like you. now go get lost before i throw a rubber ball at you.

then alan and i would smash lego cars against walls to see which car was tougher.

ah simpler times.

Chappy Chanuka people!

see that pretty girl over there on the right

? the one surrounded by sweet little african kids. orphans and sick ones. thats my truest.

for two and a half years she was in uganda helping those kids at a place called Providence Home, many of whom were dealing with the fact that their parents have died because of AIDS. some of the kids were born with birth defects and were dying until they were saved by the sweet nuns that my truest volunteered with.

for almost the last two years my truest has been back in america. dissatisfied. trying to find work that was as important and valuable as what she was doing in uganda. but after such a life-changing experience where she learned the language, ate the foods, slept in the modest facilities, and most importantly bonded beautifully with all the people, she was unwilling to just get any old job at any old company doing any old thing.

so tomorrow afternoon she flies back to africa for a month and a half. literally for the kids.

over the last few weeks we have been shopping for little things that they would like: soccer balls, stickers (they love putting them on their sweet faces), candy for the nuns, pencils, pencil sharpeners, etc etc. the goal was to get as many small things that could fit two duffel bags so these kids can have a really nice Christmas.

now when the truest was in africa the first time she didnt do any fundraising because while in the peace corps her job was to help the community learn how to be self-sufficient. which she did. the ball began rolling, the orphanage learned how to raise and sell pigs, among other things.

but as you can imagine, it was just a start. recently the truest talked to the Sisters and the current Peace Corps volunteer, and learned that their usual resources aren’t meeting immediate medical and school supplies needs. so she is going to also be bringing some much needed cash so they can give the kids the most important things they need.

you can help by donating anything: $5 can go sooo far, so imagine what $20 can do.

click here and give the best Christmas gift you could give all year.

100% (minus the paypal fees) goes right to the needs of these sweet kids in uganda.

i will miss my truest for the next six weeks but i know she will be doing the right thing for the right people for a nice long time. she will have her bags of fun toys and sweets, and she will be collecting cash for the Sisters to heal and educate the kids. seems too good to be true, but thats who she is, a sweet angel.

awwwwwww

today is the 24th birthday of one of the coolest people you’ll ever meet

danielle

Danielle!

danielle and i met many moons ago when we both worked at E!

i remember clearly how one of the producers said omg tony youre going to love this new girl we hired.

i thought ah shes a cub fan? shes into balding black men? she can levitate?

danielle

turned out she was a free spirit who loved bukowski and posing for pictures and wearing hot clothes and writing and embracing life will full force.

the first time we talked we connected right away. we talked and talked and talked.

after that we went to lunch together almost every day, and even went on coffee breaks before and after lunch.

danielle

rarely would we go to dinner. or hang out at night. which was fine because really we were cushioning the misery that we both shared working in that lifesucking building.

for some reason danielle moved to san dieger to get her masters, which she got, but as anyone who has spent much time down there knows, sd can suck the life right out of you too. which is what is happening to our fair princess.

she needs to move outta there. she needs to find her prince charming. like X said many years ago, shes gotta get out (get out) get out (get out) get oooooout.

danielle

its remarkable that such a beautiful person inside and out can have such bad luck with the opposite sex when all she wants to do is love and celebrate life, but such is the curious case of danielle k.

i heart her so, but even i am repulsed by the 619 so ive only visited her a few times, which makes me a bad friend, which i am. but this weekend or next i will see her and give her a great birthday gift.

until then, as the little drummer boy said, i have this gift for you parumpapumppum.

danielle

happy birthday danielle – the reason its so sunny in san diego is because of your warm soul

and sparkling eyes

and the way you skinny dip in the pacific thinking no one can see you

i cant believe that november is almost over

which means 2010 is almost over.

which makes me think, did i actually accomplish anything this year?

kiss any new girls? invent anything awesome. grow in personal ways? create something cool at work?

push envelopes?

risk emotionally?

improve physically?

develop spiritually?

feel like a loser? i do! so the question is, can you make up for a lame year in the last month?

surprisingly: yes you can.

yes We can!
