week in review: it was a tough one

– it was a bad week for “The Homecoming”… on Wednesday Mischa Barton the star of the scary movie, directed by Morgan J. Freeman (the man who brought you “16 and Pregnant”), was sent to the psych ward of a hospital after she had a phone call with police. because of her incarceration Barton missed her own premiere. if that wasn’t bad enough, here it is Sunday and “The Homecoming” has a perfectly awful 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 15 reviews. The NY Times scoffed, “Homecoming is coldly efficient for what it is. But what it is is trash.”

– it was a bad week for trade secrets if your name is Twitter… some hacker broke into one of their employees’ email accounts and then was able to find out pretty much everything the company has done, is doing, and wants to do – and then sent it all to TechCrunch who subsequently published a good chunk of it into the interwebs. the only thing it really taught me is that Ev Biz and Jason really think hard about the way they do business and not only want Twitter to really succeed, but they want their employees to be super happy.

– it was a bad week for curling your hair naked in your hotel room… ESPN hottie discovered the hard way that asswipes will go that extra step to put a spycam through a hotel keyhole and video as much as one can – and subsequently post it on the web. but what could be worse is even after all the “attention”, no one remembers the blonde reporters name, nor would recognize her if she waltzed past. or is that the silver lining?

– it was a bad week for gravity… a man tried to kill himself in Orange County by jumping out of a window (yes, Irvine can do that to ya). Unfortunately the hotel was only 8 stories high and he landed on a well maintained slab of grass. he’ll have a sore back and a broken bone or two, but now he’ll actually have to face his demons. take em on head first, bro.

– it was a bad week for Black dudes dressed up in KKK outfits… a gentleman who claims his name is Michael Hunt went to fight City Hall this week dressed in a curious getup for an African American. when it was his turn to rock the mic to protest the fact that he was not allowed a vendors license, the council walked out on him, ruining the quorum, and shutting down the meeting. was it the hat?

some people flock to the spotlight

some people adore the public attention

not me. i like the behind the scenes action. i like the personal relationships. i like helping those with the dreams of being a star to reach those dreams.

yet somehow i often find myself on a stage or in front of a camera or being quoted by the powerful and its so embarrassing to me because i swear to you my desire is to be in the back back background.

a ghost in the machine.

yesterday at this time i was freaking out because i was preparing to be the host of a panel discussion in the Chandler Auditorium at the LA Times.

that would be scary enough. but in the audience was all of our major advertisers. so one false move and… tragedy.

little did i know our publisher (pictured, above) was going to introduce me, and my boss was going to follow me and show off our new redesign which we will launch next month.

on the panel were two entrepreneurs (one from Ning, one from Passenger), our social media chief at the Times – Andrew Nystrom, and a VP from Facebook. the discussion was social networking and social media and how brands and advertisers could better use it to attract and retain their customers.

i was shaking, which in a way is a cool feeling because it reminds me that im alive. its the same feeling i get right before im about to kiss a hot babe for the first time. but its not a feeling that i live for like some of the actors and musicians ive met. its an unnatural buzz that i wouldnt mind not having for the rest of the year.

but i learned from years of public speaking when i was a rep for Philips/Magnavox and several startups that the best way to get rid of the shakes is to literally jump into the fear. so off-script, after i took the stage but before i introduced the panel, i took the wireless mic with me into the standing room only crowd and said hi to the advertisers in the front row. there was amoeba and audi and LA Live and several others and i asked everyone to give each other a round of applause for making it to the 9am summit and we were ready to rock.

all went well, people laughed when they should. we had a twitter stream running on a huge movie screen behind us, and we invited people to comment with the hashtag #smms at the end of their tweet, and i think many were impressed and amused that their message instantly made it on the screen for all to see. it was proof that social networking was all around is, part of our literal and virtual conversation, and it was clearly in the house.

afterwards people congratulated me, but i was just happy it was over. some people are Talent, as they call actors and musicians in hollywood, im quite satisfied just being part of the crew.

around lunchtime i got an email from one of the powerful women who put together the summit. she was inviting me and the dozen other LAT staffers who were integral to the event for a pizza party upstairs, and i saw something that id never seen before. it was super cool. after we had our pizza and ate cupcakes, she went around the table and personally thanked each and every one of us in a heartfelt and beautiful way. she even thanked my intern (who had been running the computer that showed the twitter stream) because one false move and tragedy could have happened. as we walked down the hall after the lunch i told him, i know youre 20 and never had that many jobs – what you just saw, high ranking management being that sincere and geniune is something ive never seen in all my days – and ive worked with great people before, and i currently work with great people. but i told my guy, dont get used to that, that was super cool and very out of the ordinary.

and the rest of the day was wild, but i felt the after buzz of all that adrenaline. and it was so very nice to end the day with sushi with karisa and much needed booze.

the best quote of the panel? it came from andrew leary of the social media network Passenger. in describing social networking he said something so good that it fit this tweet: social media is like teen sex. everyone wants to have it; no one knows how to do it; when it’s over they say “that’s it?!?”

the best reveal of the summit? our publisher announced that according to neilson the LA Times website is the fastest growing newspaper site over the last 12 months. whereas some websites have actually lost readers (huge newspapers that many of you know), LAT.com is number 1 by a LOT.

you can see the rest of the stream of #smms tweets here.

one of the only bummers of getting older

is you dont get to see your friends as much as you used to.

once there was a time when i saw our pal every. dayum. day.

he was a street vendor outside my house on haight street.

effer would hawk all sorts of wares, tonics and potions.

when hed take his lunch break hed pull out a kazoo and sing little songs of this and that and woo the housewives and ladies of frisco and then sell them cleaning products and finery.

one day he got his hands on a fancy guitar rumored to be that of mr robert johnson, but it turned out to just be an old hank williams instrument so he decided to keep it.

funny thing about that guitar. it was haunted. with love. love and demons.

as ken strummed that demon device all the angels and saints of bygone eras came blasting out and before we knew it ken was on tour and a black man named Charles took over the trinket business.

turns out someone recorded some of ken’s tunes and now you and you and even you can hear the melodies from the past the present and the future of the california cowboy born in new orleans.

and yahoo music, of all places is where you can find it.

listen for free and be amazed.

theres a hot girl snoozing in my bed right now

soon a maid will come and clean my bachelor pad.

the sun is shining, the doves are keeping cool in soil beneath the whippoorwills. and beneath my tv a tivo quietly hums as it records Regis.

here it is wednesday morning and if youd ask me to describe my sense of place tuesday morning you would have received a completely different sketch. its one reason im somewhat insane. life changes so fast in my life. things shift daily if not hourly. its a wonder my truest has stuck around for the ride for so long because its not always a smooth journey.

the other night we were bickering and we ate our rotisserie chicken quietly and in a move of passive aggression i didnt brush my teeth before hitting the hay so that the garlic paste on my tongue would mix with morning breath and punish her as she slept.

tolstoy says that a couple no longer in love will venture in a path of hate, just as passionate if not more so as when they were courting. more proof that russians are pricks. i dont ever want to go down such paths. all i want to do is love and be loved. and live.

last night we ate at the delicious sushi palace and all was kool n the gang. maybe it was the saki. maybe it was the melt in yr mouth raw fish disguised as love. but we didnt turn on howard stern on the drive home, we didnt turn on the tv when we got back to my pad, we didnt delve into any sensitive topics. we just looked at each other, cracked the bedroom window open, and fell asleep with pleasant smiles on our faces.

privately knowing that this little coda to our long running romance was probably over, but so what. at least we were living in the present and that was just fine for a tuesday.

who says republicans dont have a sense of humor?

We’re live blogging what could be your next Supreme Court justice’s nomination hearings and a protester disrupted the proceedings. Our man in D.C. wrote this:

In the middle of a somewhat austere colloquy between Sen. Charles Grassley and Judge Sonia Sotomayor over property rights, yet another anti-abortion protester leaped to his feet. A stocky man in a business suit issued a warning to Republicans if they support Sotomayor: “The GOP is done!” he screamed. “Baby killers!”

Sen Grassley then dryly said this:

gotta give him a golf clap for that one.

the rest of our coverage is right here cuz i know how much you care.
