“The ‘Mission Accomplished’ sign, of course,

was put up by the members of the USS Abraham Lincoln, saying that their mission was accomplished,”

President Bush said last year, distancing himself and his administration from the controversal sign that hung high on the aircraft carrier May 1,2003.

But upon closer look at other Bush signs like their Jobs and Growth banner

or the Waterloo, Iowa sign that the president used today in the heartland like it wasnt any big deal what so ever.

it wouldnt be a big deal if the administration really has nothing to do with the mission accomplished sign.

it wouldnt be a big deal if once again the bush administration has been caught straight up lying about not little things, but big things, war shit, and now propaganda shit.

by using the same style sign and design for the banner today in iowa the president’s people are saying, those dumbfucks chewing on their own cud wont notice shit, they havent seemed to notice shit so far

the graphics are identical with the Mission Accomplished sign that the president originally swore was the doing of those of the USS Lincoln,

plus the type set is nearly the same.

what’s peculiar is during the original controversy regarding the sign on the Lincoln, the administration first said that the seamen had put the sign up, and the president had nothing to do with it.

but then when they were pressed they said

oh you mean that mission accomplished sign, oh yeah, that was done by an outside company:

After the news conference, a White House spokeswoman said the Lincoln’s crew asked the White House to have the sign made. The White House asked a private vendor to produce the sign, and the crew put it up, said the spokeswoman. She said she did not know who paid for the sign.

apparently that same private vendor who no one knows is continuing to make the Bush signs.

you’d think that after all the flap about the original sign they’d change the design and/or typset but never one to appear to be flipping or flopping, the president and his people have stood firm on these placards ignoring any immediate recognition that the average american would make with the original.

developing…

there are two good-sized group blogs in LA

blogging.la and laist.com

sadly, they are fighting.

laist says that they are getting more hits, and therefore they win.

they have a hi-tech graph to prove it.

blogging.la has a graph to prove that they have retained some sort of sense of humor.

the best part so far was when jason defillippo (inventor of blogrolling, co-creator of blogging.la) tried to post the following comment about the stats on laist.com, but they had just turned off their comments

No, I don’t think they’re accurate. I think they’re a piece of shit. They were posted to the site to give us a baseline for our internal tracking. They show less than a third of our actual visits per day. And don’t give me this light hearted bullshit. When you have the nerve to post “yep- it does sort of rub their nose in it. i’m comfortable with that!” it’s not light hearted anymore. Fuck it, it never was. You have a problem with us, fine. You think you’re better than us, fine. You call us out publicly well then expect us to get pissed. What is it with you “ist” people and this superiority complex? Pardon me. I am going to go have a nice cool glass of lemonade now and forget you exist.

so which side is the busblog on?

as someone who hasnt even gotten close to the technorati 100, i can tell you first hand that hits dont mean shit 🙂

however, laist does put me on the top of their blogroll while blogging.la, which regularily links to the busblog does not have me on their permanant blogroll.

actually i hope they keep fighting cuz its always best for the readers when “competitors” cause a little drama in the city of angels/

Gauchos in Hyperspace

by Martin Boer

October, 2004

Dear Gaucho,

In recent days, two current and one former member of the UCSB faculty have received Nobel Prizes, giving UCSB with three Nobels (once again) more than any other university in the world.

David J Gross won for Physics and Finn E Kydland for Economics. Former UCSB prof Frank Wilczek (1980-88) also won for Physics.

This now bumps UCSB’s Nobel tally to 7 present and former professors. Previously, UCSB won one Nobel in 1972 (Schrieffer/Physics), one in 1998 (Kohn/Chemistry) and two in 2000 (Kroemer/Physics, Heeger/Chemistry).

Alumni is a different story. No UCSB grads have thus far garnered the ultimate accolade but the Nexus and its sister environs remain an undisputably good training ground for winning future prizes.

On a more personal note, Trine and I are proud to announce the birth of THEA ALEXANDRA BOER on 8 September in Windhoek. She weighed in at 2,620 grams and 49 cm. Little Thea is without doubt the first Dutch-American-Norwegian baby born in Namibia. Thea and mom are doing really well, save of course the last month of sleepless nights… Check out: http://www.martinboer.com

people can say a lot

about the republicans, but they cant ever say that theyre not loyal.

last week the president couldnt have had a worse week.

on Monday defense secretary donald rumsfeld that he had never seen a connection between saddam and osama. “To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two.”

He also lost favor of his fifth GOP senator, Rhode Island’s Link Chafee, a prep school friend of the president’s brother, Jeb.

Earlier in the day ambassador to the us-led occupation of iraq paul bremer criticized Bush for not getting enough troops into Iraq. “We never had enough troops on the ground,” he said.

Perhaps the president didnt care since Jerry Falwell had announced a few days earlier that the evangelical Christians now control the republican party.

“I tell my Republican friends who are always talking about the ‘big tent,” I say make it as big as you want to, but if the candidate running for president is not pro-life, pro-family … you’re not going to win,” Rev. Falwell added.

Things didnt get much better on Tuesday when Dick Cheney cowering and mumbling during the only VP debate, suggested that he had never said that there was a relationship between 9/11 and Iraq, even though he had – several times; led millions of voters to FactCheck.com, who redirected web surfers to bush-hating George Soros’s web site; dodged questions about his support of the constitutional amendment to ban gay weddings despite the fact that his own daughter is a lesbian; and most embarrasing of all flat out lied when he said that he had not met Sen. Edwards until that very night (even though they had met at least three times, and sat right next to each other just a year ago), a meeting that Cheney said would have been very easy to do since the VP said that he was the presiding officer nearly every Tuesday that Senate was in office. It turned out that the Veep had been the presiding officer only twice over the last four years.

When Cheney wasn’t putting his foot in his mouth, his challenger Edwards was reminding people who this vice president was as a congressman: “When he was one of 435 members of the United States House, he was one of 10 to vote against Head Start, one of four to vote against banning plastic weapons that can pass through metal detectors.

“He voted against the Department of Education. He voted against funding for Meals on Wheels for seniors. He voted against a holiday for Martin Luther King. He voted against a resolution calling for the release of Nelson Mandela in South Africa.”

on Wednesday a presidential led investigation presented a 1,000 page report that said Iraq had no wmd when we invaded, had no stockpiles anywhere, hadnt made any wmd since 1991, and their capabilities for making them had decreased since our sanctions had begun.

whoops.

Thursday brought Bush into unfamiliar territory. He had to admit that he was wrong. That indeed there were no wmd, you know, the reason he used to bring us to war against Iraq.

Instead of saying that he was wrong to invade a country who didnt have the weapons that he claimed they had, he said forget that they didnt have wmd, “America is safer today with Saddam Hussein in prison.” even… though… he had… no wmd… or ties.. to osama… implying that america is such a pussy ass target that even countries without wmd or relationships with known terrorists can hurt the land of the free and the home of the brave.

does this mean we can finally invade mexico? or at least publicly invite anna kournikova to pose for playboy?

On Friday Bush debated Sen Kerry and talked about rumors on the Internets and how he wasnt aware that he owned a timber company, but the best was how he dodged the question to list three times that he had made mistakes over the last four years.

He didnt mention the lack of wmd, or for not paying closer attention to the august pdr entitled Bin Laden Determined to Strike US, or for taking the worlds largest surplus ever and turning it into the worlds biggest deficit ever. Instead he said that the mistakes he made were in appointing a few low-level people to boards we had never heard of. (Thus implying that their fuckups he would take responsibility for.)

Today the polls are saying that despite that disaster of a week, and gasoline prices which jumped 30 cents over the weekend, Kerry is only 3 points ahead of the bungling incumbent.

Making this blogger wonder: outside of having an intern suck his knob in the oval office, is there nothing that Bush can do wrong in the eyes of half of america?

this should have been wilco’s video + the star wars kid makes the big time + umar siddiqi

I am, I am,

I am Superman

and I know what’s happening

I am, I am,

I am Superman

and I can do anything

You don’t really love that guy you make it with now do you

I know you don’t love that guy cause I can see right through you

(repeat chorus 1)

(chorus 2)

If you go a million miles away I’ll track you down girl

Trust me when I say I know the pathway to your heart

this is the month of libra

my birth month. the ruling planet of libra is venus. goddess of love.

most librans believe in the ideals of peace and love. we yearn for balance and fairness and harmony.

we’re usually creative and open minded while looking for the beauty in things, the poetry, the grace.

because of this, libras make good writers, fair judges, objective ombudsmen.

being the cardinal (the leaders) of the air signs, we can see the truth in intellectual ideals but understand the pragmatism necessary to make the idea reasonable and practical.

we’re not afraid to tell the world that we love it.

i love you world.

the bad news is we get bored very easilly. we can be sluts. we can talk to much and be narcisistic (hello, its called tonypierce.com). and because it’s so easy to see many many possibilities, sometimes its hard for us to make a decision.

we’re also not as violent as the xbi would probably want us to be.

or very confrontive.

or all that great with follow-up.

as you know, im a freak. part of that might be due to the fact that since i was born on 10/22, i am part libra part scorpio.

scorpios like mystery. it may appear that a scorpio is putting everything on the table, but that would be the fakeout. theres a shell on the scorpion. theres also a tail with a dagger on its tip so watch it.

the good news is scorpios are the sexiest of the signs. love is second only to sex. and that sex ends with three x’s.

a scorpio will tell the world that it loves it, but only on a blog that says “nothing in here is true.”

i love you, world.

scorpios can keep a secret that would kill a libra to hold on to.

you could find yourself in a conversation with a scorpio and not realize that he or she hasnt said a word, simply mesmorized you with their smile, egged you on with their nods.

ask a scorpio how hes doing and the answer will ususally end in a “how are you doing?” and it’s not because theyre being polite.

ive met several people born on my birthday. the last one i met was naked within minutes after she found out what day i was born. who were we foolin. sex + love equals dirty tender friskiness with a healthy dose of intellectual narciscism that led to the battle of the loins.

and then we never talked to each other again.

ever.

the closest thing to astrological perfection ive ever experienced.

so if you feel love in the air this october, dont fight it.

it doesnt need to be sex love or crush love, it could just be a love of a thing or a place or a feeling or even a smell.

the goddess of love is here in large doses.

enjoy her while you can

and on 10/23 prepare for the sultry sting of the scorpion.

3 Western States to Vote on Pot Proposals

By DAVID CRARY, AP National Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Bush administration’s war on drugs stretches deep into Asia and Latin America, yet one of its most crucial campaigns — in the eyes of drug czar John Walters — is being waged this fall among voters in Oregon, Alaska and Montana.

In each state, activists seeking to ease drug laws have placed a marijuana-related proposal on the Nov. 2 ballot as part of a long-running quest for alternatives to federal drug policies they consider harsh and ineffective.

If all three measures are approved, Montana would become the 10th state to legalize pot for medical purposes, Oregon would dramatically expand its existing medical-marijuana program, and Alaska would become the first state to decriminalize marijuana altogether.

Walters has been campaigning in person against the measures, taking a particularly aggressive role in opposing Oregon’s Measure 33. It would create state-regulated dispensaries to supply marijuana, let authorized growers sell pot to patients for a profit, and allow patients to possess a pound of it at a time instead of the current 3-ounce limit.

“They use medical marijuana as a Trojan horse,” Walters said of the measure’s supporters. “People’s suffering is being used for legalizing drug use beginning with marijuana and moving forward.”

Oregon and Alaska are among nine states which, since 1996, have adopted laws allowing qualified patients to use medical marijuana. The others are California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Vermont and Washington.

The U.S. House defeated a proposal in July to stop the federal government from prosecuting people who use marijuana for medical reasons in states that allow it. A case raising that same issue is to be considered soon by the Supreme Court.

Oregon and Alaska activists say their ballot measures would eliminate problems patients now face in obtaining enough marijuana to ease their suffering.

In Oregon, for example, the 10,000 patients enrolled in the current program must grow their own pot or get it from designated “caregivers” who cannot be paid.

“It takes knowledge, money and everything going right to grow high-quality marijuana,” said John Sajo, 48, a longtime drug-reform activist who runs the Measure 33 campaign from a cramped office. “Most patients suffering debilitating medical conditions just aren’t able to grow their own.”

Madeline Martinez, a former prison guard, does manage to grow marijuana at her Portland home. She appreciates the chance to legally use pot, rather than powerful prescription drugs, to ease the discomfort of her degenerative disc and joint disease.

“Instead of being in a drug-induced stupor, I can interact with my grandchildren,” said Martinez, 53. “It’s given me the quality of life I wanted.”

The Oregon Medical Association differs, calling Measure 33 bad public health policy. Oregon’s prosecutors also oppose the measure, which trails in statewide polls.

“There’s enough stuff out in our world to lead young people astray without adding another one,” said Benton County District Attorney Scott Heiser.

Alaskans will vote on a measure even more far-reaching than Oregon’s — to prohibit prosecution of anyone 21 or older who consumes, grows or distributes pot for private personal use. It would allow authorities to regulate marijuana along the lines of alcohol and tobacco — for example, taxing it and barring its use in public.

Even a leading foe of the measure, former U.S. Attorney Wev Shea, believes it might pass, thanks partly to sophisticated advertising backed by national marijuana-reform organizations.

“They’ve got a lot of money behind them and they’re running a very professional campaign,” Shea said in a telephone interview. “It’s difficult for us on the other side — we don’t get paid a penny.”

Under a 1975 state court ruling, Alaskans already have the tacit right to possess up to four ounces of pot in their homes for personal use. Shea said decriminalization supporters suggest in ads that any crackdown on at-home pot use might be followed by a crackdown on gun ownership.

Shea contended that the state’s top elected officials, and Alaska-based federal authorities, have been too reserved in challenging the measure, apparently because of concerns that they shouldn’t actively take sides in a referendum campaign.

“They’re so worried about offending the so-called freethinkers in Alaska,” Shea said. “But you’ve got to stand up for what you believe in.”

Walters acknowledged that Alaskans’ libertarian attitudes might benefit the other side — but feels approval would be a disaster.

“I don’t think there’s another state that’s suffered as much from substance abuse as Alaska,” Walters added. “It’s shocking that we’d have outside groups working to make this problem worse.”

In Montana, a recent poll indicated the medical marijuana measure would be approved, and few top officials have campaigned vigorously against it. The chief spokesman for the measure, investment adviser Paul Befumo, is aware that such proposals have always prevailed when going before voters in other states. “You don’t want to be the first that loses,” he said.

National drug-reform groups hope state medical-marijuana programs will proliferate, and have produced studies asserting that existing programs don’t trigger increases in youth marijuana use or other feared problems.

“It’s slow and cumbersome to go state by state, but when you do get closer to the people, it seems you have a better chance,” said Bruce Mirkin of the Marijuana Policy Project. “If people keep supporting reform measures, at some point a light bulb will go off over Congress and we’ll see changes at the federal level.”

lost

wednesdays on abc

starring that dude from party of five, that dude from lord of the rings, jack osbornes long lost fatter brother, some super hot babe from kingdom hospital, that dude from alias, and the narrator from oz who was in the wheelchair

definately my favorite new tv show, lost makes the survivor people look like crybabies.

these people werent flown first class with the chance to win a million bones, the lost people’s plane crashed 1,000 miles from where they were supposed to be.

theres only one doctor and a dozen supermodels and you dont hear them bitching.

and cooperation? this wild eyed genius iraqi dude comes back from exploring with a small group of freaks, stands on a tree stump and says to the 47 others “we need three groups, each group pick a leader, this group needs to gather food, this group needs to gather water, this group needs to suck on my bone.”

and they all do it.

theyve been stranded for two days and the fat guy is offered fresh sushi from a japanese man in a shirt and tie and the fat guy says no thank you.

no body seems to need any water.

and the hottest chick ive ever seen in my life is a criminal on the run but since she has a heart of gold she saves everyone as theyre passed out and bleeding.

the doctor is such a badass he has her sew a two foot gash on his back cuz he cant reach it.

nobodys complaining, survivors. no one is gaying out like richard by running around naked. no one is bossing anyone around. no one is crying that their loved ones just got blowed up.

even the pregnant woman is just sitting on an airplane seat nicely placed on a sand dune. looking out at the sunset sinking into the ocean.

a polar bear charged the small group and the big tall handsome asshole shot him five times with the automatic pistol and nobody goes what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck and nobody else goes ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

the dude from lord of the rings seems to be snorting h because hes addicted and there arent any needles laying around this island even though it seems to have everything including a shy toothless dinosaur who enjoys playing with his food and not really eating it.

the plane got split into three(?) but the biggest chunk is the middle which could probably house 48 comfortably but instead of removing the dead bodies which surely will begin to reek any day now, they cower beneath peices of the wing for shelter and show us all how to keep it real.

my favorite scene was when the guy from oz was hauling ass through the jungle scared of something chasing him and he ran into a japanese woman who was bathing herself while standing up nude next to a tree.

she didnt cover herself with her hands. she didnt flinch. she wasnt ashamed even though earlier her husband had her button her blouse up to the very top. and the brotha didnt stop looking at her. he stuttered and said sorry but he didnt move away he didnt keep running from the unseen creature who sounded like a lion and probably had never tasted black man before he just kept talking about nothing and finally told her that there was something in those scary woods.

and it is creepy which is why i really like it.

and its filmed beautifully and the words are just right and the casting couldnt have been better

and because we’ve only seen a fraction of the passengers i think you could toss a special guest star in there from time to time.

in last weeks episode the big tall handsome bully mean guy took the gun and shot at this guy who was dying to put him out of his misery and when the doctor ran in to see what the fuck was happening

he said i shot him

and the doctor said, you fool you hit his lung, it will take him

hours

to die now!

and then he suffocated him.

and all i know is that dinosaur better watch his ass.

it was sean and jaime‘s birthday on friday + charlotte + simpleton

her english isnt so good

but mines not all that neither.

at first she was shy but when she saw i wasnt gonna judge her for wanting to fuck 5-6 times a day she opened up.

i think shes italian im not sure maybe from peru.

her favorite phrases in her cute accent are

how-do-you-say

and i love you.

i tell her just speak your language, your language. shes drunk and spent and sprawled out over the polar bear rug (faux) (im so sure) with just her short shorts on playing with his ears. fake brushing his teeth. blah blah blah she says and soon i see shes crying. sobbing really. but tears coming down, mascara dripping, snot getting sucked back up.

continue-aye i say and toss her the roll of paper towels and im listening but with my heart. get it out baby. i hold her hand and she just cries and cries coughing out the words in that gorgeous tounge.

we all have sad stories i whisper, not hushing her not saying its gonna be ok cuz i only lie in the blog and in real life everything just might not end up ok. so cry pretty girl and drink some of this.

she goes on for so long that i forget that im in a fantasy nba league and i miss the live draft. now theres two of us crying.

the doorbell rings and its pink dot with vodka and rocky road cuz im starting to think shes russian. the american girls have told me in so many words that im not their type and thats cool with me. im not my type neither.

and for a town that was 86 degrees on friday night it feels like 16 degrees tonight so i light the fire

bring out the blankets and see what the computer picked for me besides elton brand.

and then we hold each other and cry some more

happy that jose lima is alive and well

and has finally broken out of his shell.

but not sure we’re gonna be awake for snl to bore us to sleep.
