set your tivos good people

to the Screen Savers on G4TV (formerly TechTV) for this Monday, December 13 cuz yours truly will be on it talking about my new book How To Blog

which by the way is selling like hotcakes all of a sudden.

to which i must thank all of you who are talking about it on your blogs.

The Screen Savers is one of my favorite shows and im stoked that they have moved down here from frisco.

im sorta glad that Leo LaPorte isnt on it any more because that dude is like one of my all-time idols and if he was interviewing me i would probably come off no better than stutterring john.

which isnt to say that i wont make a fool of myself

but be prepared for a very special screensavers cuz either i will totally rock or i will totally fall on my face.

im quite nervous. ive been on tv before. ive spoken in front of people a lot before. but it usually was representing something else like WebTV or Microsoft or Philips Electronics or something that had nothing to do with me so it was easy to distance what i was talking about from me.

this is truly different because these are my deepest darkest personal lies that i edited, whose cover i designed, whose hype im responisble for.

the biggest fear i have is i will come across as boring.

i know there are kids out there who think that blogging is the dumbest nerdiest lamest thing, and in many cases i agree with them.

and those are the kids i will try, foolishly, to win over.

and in a small way thats why i created the list which turned into the book.

and then there are the people out there who truly want to learn about what blogging is and how it’s done. i hope i dont ignore those people, cuz theyre really who i should be talking to.

and finally there’s the hot chicks who i’ll be trying to make fall in lust with me.

not sure how i will accomplish that by being on G4TV, but expect the unexpected is what i was taught as a child.

either way it will be a reason to wake up monday morning.

i will take lots of pictures so you guys can see what goes on behind the scenes, etc., and if anyone out there knows how to turn such a show into something that you can download and watch on your computers, that would be amazing.

in other news, tonight is the xbi christmas party.

and karisa is my date!

blondes bloggers have more fun.

today

in all the world in the tallest of grasses near the bubbling brooks atop the neighingest asses floats a butterfly of majesty a notebook full of dashed dreams a pocketful of shaving cream a mousekateer of slutty fear

her name was dopey seventeen prom queen of the unseen. typist with the jelly beans, icycle licker at walgreens. never said a bad word, never touched a dead bird, always said the right things strung out on my collard greens.

touch me if you want

touch me if you want

she loved to say the darndest things

touch me

tony

here

now here.

we’d walk down the street and it felt like spain it felt like led zeppelin street it felt like baja. she held my entire arm in hers she couldnt get enough she couldnt smile more she couldnt but she would if she couldnt but she could: wait.

never saw when harry met sally and he loved her for that what about joe versus the volcano and she said no what about sleepless in seatle and she gave him a look like come on think alternative nation think exclusively babish feel her docs under the table think slightly unstable.

come over here closer

she sign languaged so subtlely

george forman grill clicked off

hot tub started bubbling

she said i feel like im chasing you all over

she said i feel like im another bladeless lawn mower

and certain falls the cocky rocky

lost but sure his way is right

turns his back upon the present

and sleeps alone and cold at night

but he did have a magnificent

and throbbing

mighty sword

the kind they talked about

round the world

an envy to some

a miracle to others

a dream for daughters

a sin for their mothers

but then there was sonny

fake name was tony

teef full of gold

hollow leg stuffed with money

whattya writing about. love. what about. about a woman who has to pick between a man with a huge magical perfect dick and a man who doesnt have one. what does the other one have. a baldspot, and hes a good writer. anything else. no. hmmm well hmmmm does the other guy have enough money to get a vibrator. yeah. well then whoevers nicer

she had small teeth and made brocolli beef. candles everywhere even in her hair. she knew something right she was super high. he knew everything but he was about to fry.

sometimes theres a sound out there something not so kosher there sometimes theres a sometimes something sometimes times some sum times tie me’s.

and summer brings a false september through the waving grains of gold

rock isnt dead

its just taking a looooong smoke break

and thats why the new green day record sounds so good.

kate and i were on the phone tonight trying to figure out what the fuck is up with rock and shes a sweet girl

but im not.

i blame the kids, who were given everything.

how does a band like good charlotte turn into the whiney mess that they are when i bet their first concert was soundgarden circa badmotorfinger.

and where are the guitarists. where are the solos.

not that long ago you had eddie van halen and angus young and alex lifeson and the dudes in maiden

i said kate who are the best guitarists in rock right now and she said jack white

and i said, good, who else.

she said there werent any.

i said yes, j masics, but who else?

but there werent any more.

nice work, red states.

and i thought about the punk scene, which there isnt one, and i started to see that without strong metal and punk influences, rock just winds up being everything that isnt slutpop or rap.

which is why maroon five even has a record deal.

and i blame coldplay and i blame john mayer and i blame rick rubin for not doing more with the jesus and mary chain.

only in a rock drought could the pixies resurface with zero new songs and rock harder than almost everyone at coachella this year.

part of the problem is the misconception of emo. here everyone was so quick to annoint weezer the kings of emo when in truth all the real emo bands wouldnt strap on a flying v even as a joke. and the other truth is, weezer’s metal past, and yes, guitar solos show up in many of their songs – even their last single dopenose

rivers may have dressed emo but his music was closer to green day’s than to cold plays which couldnt be said for most of the genre that they were unfortunately lumped in with.

i blame lincoln park, i blame metalica, i blame korn, all of whom could have done far more with their opportunities but instead keep making the non-rock decisions which fuck it up for those who should be rising like monster magnet, rancid, and the donnas.

people were all how can you like the used and im all it’s only because you have truly forgotten what passionate music is about

its only because you have no taste left for punk sensibilities unless its sporting a mohawk.

when the used is in the top ten then rock will return.

when juliette lewis and the licks are in the top ten the rock will be real again.

how the fuck is lil john more punk rock than

anything

on modern rock alternative.

nobody on college radio feels like screaming into the mic right now?

lil john does.

the used, who you dont wanna give any props to does.

rock is so soft right now that dave grohl, years removed from nirvana, can crawl out from behind his drum kit, pick a guitar and scream louder and better and clearer than anyone on kroq.

in pop songs.

and in a way i blame radiohead. or more specifically all the pencilneck critics who hailed them as the best band in america.

whats a kid supposed to do when he reads rolling stone for the first time and finds out that its all about radiohead?

and i blame beck cuz he let down rock, alternative, And hip hop. fuckr.

beck could have taken a band like interpol and made them far less pussy but since hes so pussy now he cant even take himself out of the tail spin

sing moonshadow when youre fifty, today we want the rock.

four million velvet revolver fans cant be wrong.

give us the rock.

people keep buying red hot chili pepper records hoping for something in there and they never find it.

people keep going to ozzfest and what does it tell you when the shaking old man in the neckbrace on stage is rocking harder than everyone who came before him that night?

it tells you that the kids are not alright.

theyre fat and slovenly and should think about the fact that when theres no rock then you get ashley simpson in the top twenty.

even though shes ugly and cant sing and cant dance.

tsar is going to come out of the studio and whip some peoples asses

and when they do you better be appreciative

or you’ll get seven more years of incubus.

splink + kate sullivan + <3 kitty bukkake <3

first they come for the liars

then they come for the haters, then they come for the theives.

fuck the fakers the toothless giants grunted as they bashed rocks and nibbled on the pebbles,

flossing their teeth with trombones.

finally we had time to watch the apprentice on tivo and i was telling them that theres no way trump should have kicked out the asian chick for lifting her skirt for twenty bucks.

but whoever wins will be running one of his companies a wood nymph whispered to her butterflies who spelled it out against a waterfall backdrop.

a buffalo was the first to call bullshit but im a loudmouth and i said

donald trump dares to judge how people conduct business?

donald trump who’s most famous television show, before this game show, was a beauty contest where during one segment the women infact lifted their skirts.

sorta.

the hawaiian punch volcano belched and then errupted and of course i was wearing all white including my new suede fedora. but it’s all right.

and then it stopped.

and then we went back to playing cards

with the cigar smoking pitbulls.

and the moose noticed the sissyphus, and asked dont you have anything to say to us?

he said happy hanukkah

happy hanukkah?

happy hanukkah.

and we danced.

ed bradley probably asked bob dylan

a lot more questions than we saw last night. but it seems to me that there was a nice little path that he could have taken when dylan said that he wouldnt be able to write the sort of songs that he used to write.

you know, the classic ones.

which isnt to say that he still isnt putting out great records, because he is. despite the fact that most rock stars cant make good records as they get older. let alone continue to make great records after theyve made their two or three masterpeices.

dylan said that the great records of old were from the great wellspring of creativity. so that means the followup needs to be, so why cant you as an older man get to that wellspring again? is it an age thing? is it a luck thing? if its magic does that mean that its pure luck, or part science?

they should have given him the whole sixty minutes.

it’s dylan for pete sake.

i woulda said, is it too emotional to go back to that wellspring? is it too painful?

there was a time when i was in college and i tapped into something and all this darkness was in there and hidden were these beautiful treasures. but i was terrified to go back in there years later because of all the darkness required to wade through.

is that what dylan was saying?

not that he Can’t write those types of songs again, he just doesnt want to?

i would have asked if he gets tired playing those old classics show after show. cuz one thing about dylan is he will play blowin in the wind for your ass be it at madison square garden or the bakersfield bowl.

i would have also asked him if he feels proud that springsteen was supposed to be the next dylan and never was able to really do it.

i would have asked him why he seems so sad and pissed off.

and alone.

i would have asked him what he thinks about johnny cash and all the cover songs that rick rubin had him do in his twilight years and if he was interested in doing some albums of current music.

and if i recall, ed bradley didnt ask him why its been 20 years since his last tv interview and if there was a reason for the cold shoulder or what.

i would have told him that he was great in the wilburries, touring with the dead, touring with petty, and even when he was in we are the world, and i would have asked him if he plans on teaming up with someone else again soon, like tom waits.

its raining in la.

only time this blog will give you the weather in la is when it rains.

or when its cold.

it was cold and rainy today in la.

karisa was having a little dinner party. usually i would pass. but last night i had such fun with my friends that tonight i hung out some more.

no, it wont be a trend.

karisa made stuffed mushrooms, she had brie, then she made a shrimp pasta dish, and a former coworker of hers made a delicious terra misu.

always the multitasker i brought over a pillowcase of dirty laundry to undirty.

as we drank and nibbled and watched football and listened to music i noticed that i was playing with the only cat that ive ever really liked

bad kitty.

and i remembered how this cat and his brother, good kitty, were a terror as kittens and how they got super sick and how one of them got hit by a truck.

and i remembered how many times i had either told karisa to kill the cats or sell them or toss them out a moving car or anything other than have these expensive headaches.

but fortunately nobody listens to me.

karisa would lay on her couch and mother these cats and totally care for them no matter what often times falling asleep cuddling them.

she taught them to be outside animals and somehow she taught them to come to her when she would whistle – or even open the door.

some say she mastered those skillz on non-cats, but im telling you, she had both good kitty and bad kitty perfectly trained.

and the lesson that i learned tonight was to never give up on pussy

no matter how crazy and unmanageable it might seem in the early stages.

for if you hang in there

it could end up being the best youve ever had.

and when i went out to get my laundry out of the drier, bad kitty followed me out,

cuz it can be crazy out there on the cold wet streets of hollywood, at night.

bob dylan gave his first televised interview

in twenty years tonight on sixty minutes and he said that theres no way he could write some of those old classics today.

he said he can do other things, but he said he couldnt pull off tunes like it’s alright ma or blowin in the wind today even though he wrote the latter in ten minutes thirty years ago.

he said that those songs came from the great well-spring of creativity.

a magical place.

he said magic like four times.

bob dylan one of the most articulate and prolific writers of all time boils it all down to magic

cuz what else would you call it.

bob dylan

bringing it all back home

cbs records, 1965

“it’s alright, ma (i’m only bleeding)”

Darkness at the break of noon

Shadows even the silver spoon

The handmade blade, the child’s balloon

Eclipses both the sun and moon

To understand you know too soon

There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn

Suicide remarks are torn

From the fool’s gold mouthpiece

The hollow horn plays wasted words

Proves to warn

That he not busy being born

Is busy dying.

Temptation’s page flies out the door

You follow, find yourself at war

Watch waterfalls of pity roar

You feel to moan but unlike before

You discover

That you’d just be

One more person crying.

So don’t fear if you hear

A foreign sound to your ear

It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall

Private reasons great or small

Can be seen in the eyes of those that call

To make all that should be killed to crawl

While others say don’t hate nothing at all

Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark

As human gods aim for their mark

Made everything from toy guns that spark

To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark

It’s easy to see without looking too far

That not much

Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates

Teachers teach that knowledge waits

Can lead to hundred-dollar plates

Goodness hides behind its gates

But even the president of the United States

Sometimes must have

To stand naked.

An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged

It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge

And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you

Into thinking you’re the one

That can do what’s never been done

That can win what’s never been won

Meantime life outside goes on

All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear

You suddenly find you got nothing to fear

Alone you stand with nobody near

When a trembling distant voice, unclear

Startles your sleeping ears to hear

That somebody thinks

They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit

Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy

Insure you not to quit

To keep it in your mind and not fergit

That it is not he or she or them or it

That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules

For the wise men and the fools

I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority

That they do not respect in any degree

Who despise their jobs, their destinies

Speak jealously of them that are free

Cultivate their flowers to be

Nothing more than something

They invest in.

While some on principles baptized

To strict party platform ties

Social clubs in drag disguise

Outsiders they can freely criticize

Tell nothing except who to idolize

And then say God bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire

Gargles in the rat race choir

Bent out of shape from society’s pliers

Cares not to come up any higher

But rather get you down in the hole

That he’s in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault

On anyone that lives in a vault

But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs

Limited in sex, they dare

To push fake morals, insult and stare

While money doesn’t talk, it swears

Obscenity, who really cares

Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see

With a killer’s pride, security

It blows the minds most bitterly

For them that think death’s honesty

Won’t fall upon them naturally

Life sometimes

Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards

False gods, I scuff

At pettiness which plays so rough

Walk upside-down inside handcuffs

Kick my legs to crash it off

Say okay, I have had enough

What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen

They’d probably put my head in a guillotine

But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only
