its ali millers 25th birthday

a quarter century down the tubes

jk. ali is a great friend who i miss very much because she now works on the wesssside and i dont get to see her smiling face every day when she used to work with me here at the Times.

i first met Ali at a bbq i was hosting for LAist. she was a new blogger for us and when she got to the bbq i believe she had a crop top shirt on and i was all, i think you want the party across the street.

she said tony? i said yes? she said im ali. i was all omfg.

ali and i have seen some pretty cool shows together. weezer, soul asylum, jayz + eminem. so fun!

ali and sarah and i used to go to lunch all the time together, and i miss that

but what i will really be sad about is if ali gets her dream job overseas which obvs we want her to have but secretly we will miss her long time.

but tonight we can celebrate her birth.

with drink.

and lovely thoughts.

hi blog of love

who i love but i overlook all the time

i was showing a young man some of the archives of the olden days of the busblog and my how have times changed.

its sorta sad that this has become the cliche that we all have about rock bands “geeze i liked your earlier material so much more. the stuff you created when you were young and hungry and fearless and inspired and peerless and beautiful and wreckless and angry for no reason and getting some and starting new things and Lewis & Clarking yr way through the wilderness.”

i guess my excellent excuse is im helping hundreds of others figure out how to be trailblazers in blogging on a corporate level – a much harder task than pulling it off on a personal blog, lemme tell you – but since when is the greatest hits sell out more admirable than the groundbreaking self titled debut?

last night i was reading Push, which is the book that the movie Precious is based from. talk about intense and creative and groundbreaking. shes doing stuff as a writer in that book that grab you from the very first sentence and doesnt let go (intentially) until you pass out from exhaustion.

its also not very long, so i hope to have it finished tonight and i can give you all a proper book review.

other night i ran 6 miles for no good reason. i just couldnt stop running. i also didnt wanna stop running. i also was a little buzzed from drinking margueritas.

best margueritas in LA? a place called Don Antonios in West LA. thats not where i drank these tho. these Runners Margueritas. youd think after all these years in Cali id know how to spell that word.

had a dream last night. hate dreams. in this one i saw on tv that one of my work collegeues had died by trying to push an airplane away from another airplane. see that doesnt even make sense. and somehow they had video of this woman pushing the plane and instead of getting squooshed or sucked into one of the engines, all you could see were her legs all wet. from the gasoline? see dreams make no sense.

then all these people were over at my house and it was work people and even Ashley and her husband. who i have never met. except in this dream we met and introduced ourselves. then i raised a toast and described how this woman died and how fascinating she was in real life and i was crying as i was talking about her. which is also only in dreams cuz i rarely cry unless im watching a movie. and then i woke up.

and you people enjoy dreams? why on earth?

this weekend i saw the Fabulous Mr. Fox at the Arclight with a fine woman. and this was probably my favorite movie of the year. it goes: Mr. Fox, Star Trek, Zombieland. those would be my gold silver and bronze medals if oscars were like the olympics.

ive been pretty happy this week. moreso than usual. no good reason for that either. which might be why i ran so far the other night. wanted to last night too but twas too cold to run last night. might be too cold to run all week.

crazy karisa wants me to run a 10k right before Christmas, which id do if it wasnt held at 730am. stuff white people like: waking up super early to do things they could do perfectly well at any hour. i adore karisa and i appreciate her constantly inspiring to push my boundaries and learning new things, but why would a man who enjoys running at midnight in hollywood be even slightly interested in waking up at 6:30am to drive to the wesssssside on a weekend to run with a bunch of other ridiculous people?

if theres one story in the LA Times you should read today its Steve Lopez writing about meeting a very sexy doctor who specializes in prescribing marijuana as medicine.

she says she meets about 20 people a day but doesnt give them all scripts for herb. but still lets say her visit fee is $150. thats $3,000 a day. which means she only has to work 300 days a year to make $900,000 a year.

maybe this poetry degree wasnt the most financially intelligent thing for me to get.

Gage: Follow your head or follow your heart?

ive followed my heart before. turns out my heart is a crackhead with no concept whatsoever as to whats right and whats wrong and what would work in reality and what would be good for me in the longterm. sometimes i think that following ones heart is tantamount to saying lets drink this gallon of moonshine and see how fast the family station wagon can speed through traffic at night with the lights off.

jon: Do babies have accents?

yes terrible ones. which is why the Lord in His infinite Wisdom hushed them up for their first year because theyre really annoying and detrimental to the youngins’ life expectancy.

sass: If I wanted to make holiday greeting cards to sell, could you suggest yer fave online service to do so?

i know our friend Gage has made some holiday greeting cards this year and she made them through Cafe Press. not only did i like the quality of her cards but i have worked with them on several occasions in the past and they were a great online service. and i made a good deal of money from them. so right on Cafe Press.

adriel: i’m so bored…what are good ways to make new friends when you’re old??

other than the trenchcoat at the library or the $20 bill on the fishing hook? how can you not make friends what with your hot bod, your single status, and this crazy new tool called Facebook? our pal Lindsay has had so much newfound success on Match.com that i think she has given up blogging all together and she lives in the midwest, therefore id think you’d have the same kind of luck.

Sarah: I showed my mom a pic of you and she said, “Tony looks younger every time I see him.” How do you maintain that baby face?

theres an old saying that goes, “youre only as young as your girlfriend feels”. i havent had a girlfriend, technically, in years, so i cant use that as an excuse, so i will first of all thank your kind momma (while suggesting that she get a second opinion on the prescription of her glasses), and then i will admit that i owe it all to my low carb, high fiber diet, plenty of exercise, long periods of meditation, 7 hours of sleep each night, and frequent trips to the Botox Outlet on Robertson.

Andrea: Favorite sandwich of all time?

my truest says that any sandwich made by anyone other than yourself will be delicious. i would add that PB&J on white bread still has no peers, especially if the P is extra crunchy.

Steven Allen Adams: Hey Tony. For the past few months I have allowed my news website take time away from updating my personal blog. I need some good music, but I have no idea if there are truly any good new bands that can energize me. What are your suggestions.

the other day someone asked me what new tunes they should be into and i said Funn, Those Darlins, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. I may have even provided video evidence of the last two groups. Two days later, world renowned tastemaker, and all around good guy Scott Perry praised them to high heaven last week in his New Music Tipsheet email sent to all the movers and shakers of Hollywood. (I still dont know how i got on the list.) Heres a short excerpt of his praise:

This week, [the band that is important to the music business and the business business] happens to be EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS, a band who are making waves in underground circles, but whose story has gone largely unheralded by the mainstream.

Yeah, they’ve gotten press by all the right blogs and papers. And they’re starting to get some airplay as they tour the States, including indie stalwarts KCRW, WXPN, and World Cafe. However, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros is not one of those bands that are dominating blogs & press to the point where radio HAS to play them or risk looking like a fool for not playing them. Yet.

But what’s unraveling in real time, in real life, is the band is selling out concerts with little fanfare, propelled largely by word of mouth. In all honesty, I haven’t seen anything like this since the White Stripes were selling out multiple nights in San Francisco, New York, and Detroit while they were still signed to Sympathy for the Record Industry — in other words, those who know, KNOW.

Needless to say i almost always agree with Scott and am tickled that i am with him this early in the game.

g/d: why all these empty artist pockets? could it be picky consumer? pickpockets.

artists’ pockets are always empty. as they should be. what would have Van Gogh been if he were rich? would Michaelangelo have knocked out the Sistine chapel if he could have, instead, summered at Fire Island? doubt it. hunger in the heart and in the money is the fuel of fine art. thus bring on the picky consumers and the pickpocketers.

Courtney: if you needed to fundraise $3700 how would you go about it? ps sarah’s mom is right, you are looking young in the face.

ive raised thousands of dollars on this very blog. without the help of Twitter and Facebook. if i were to do it again i would use the blog, and those two social media devices. and maybe youtube. i would be creative. i would be transparent. i would integrate PayPal and i would have a countdown. people love thermometers. but they love watching those thermometers fill up with blood even more.

Alyson: On the ladies: glasses or contacts?

im a weirdo, i like glasses. i dont care what kind of glasses. horn rimmed, john lennon type, sexy secretary, see thru vision jobs, all kinds. you know who i think is beautiful? mrs chad cavalaro. aka smelly mrs danielley. sometimes she wears matt good glasses, sometimes she goes au natural. i can see why women wouldnt wear glasses on their wedding day, but i think they are an accessory that often gets a bad rap.

monkey: can actors be trusted?

the only people who can really be trusted is your momma, your lawyer, and the man they call the blogfather.

sam z: in a month

you celebrate two years of employ at the los angeles times. what would you say is weirdest, coolest, thing youve been involved in?
